Profile bio

About Constance Fernholz Carlson

I started my career managing an independent bookstore in a community on the west side of Minneapolis. It was a delight working at that community store--greeting the regulars, reading the latest bestsellers (Harry Potter launched during those years!) and learning how to run a small business. From there, I moved into publishing, spending several years gaining experience in trade and direct-to-consumer marketing, sales, promotion, strategic planning and execution. I also gained experience in project management, product conception and development, contract negotiation and development, branding, marketing, copy writing, promotion, media outreach and licensing. For ten of those years, I had the thrill of working with The Saint John's Bible, the first handwritten, illuminated bible to be commissioned in 500 years. It was a once-in-a-lifetime project that took me overseas and across the country, telling the story of this magnificent work of art. During the last few years of my time with the Bible project, I was a freelance consultant for both the project and an extensive list of clients that included publishing companies, authors, art and heath care organizations and retail companies. The flexibility of freelance work gave me a chance to get to know my community and neighbors better. I volunteered for and launched several local food systems and agricultural organizations. This "side-hustle" eventually led me to my current work at The University of Minnesota as the Assistant Statewide Director for the UMN Extension Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP). I work with community leaders, businesses, artists, educators, farmers and consumers who are driven to advance sustainable ideas for themselves and their communities. Over the years, I have worked on a range of projects, from working with growers and businesses to launch new crops such as Kernza and hybrid hazelnuts, to testing novel supply chains and promoting clean energy. Specialties: Excellent communication (written and verbal), networking, grant writing, collaboration and negotiation skills, licensing, brand development, and project management. Interestingly, I find that my theater background has served me well, giving me the skills and experience to foster trust, team-building and effective communication strategies. Additionally, theatre training prepared me to always look for ways to incorporate art, expression and storytelling in my work.

Listed skills include Copywriting, Social Media, Social Media Marketing, Public Relations, and 27 others.
