At Floorspan Contracts we manufacture and install: 150mm and 225mm deep, prestressed concrete beams, ‘hollowcore’ wideslab planks and pre-cast stairs at our modern casting facility in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Our product and service is frequently utilised throughout the construction industry on projects ranging from domestic extensions to multiplot developments carried out by national home builders. My main role is planning, scheduling and managing precast floor installations nationally. For an installation to be successful, it is necessary that the installation, transport, estimation, design and projects teams work closely with the client. Therefore, the ability to coordinate several different teams simultaneously, as well as managing client expectations, is key.As a popular and growing company, we may have several teams of installers working on different projects nationally at any one time. So, another vital part of my job is carrying out site visits and acting as a point of contact for both the fitters and the client.Attention to detail is also vital, as this allows me to avoid issues arising that would otherwise have costly and time-consuming results. Additionally, a current and thorough understanding of, and commitment to, health and safety and building regulations is crucial as we work on active construction sites.

The role of principle designer developed when Floorspan reached a point at which our size and client base called for an experience designer to act as a point of contact for company wide design queries. The other aspect of this role is that the more complicated plank and multistory design briefs were also my responsibility.

A precast designer at Floorspan Contracts is an essential member of the team. Each quotation comes with a bespoke design that acts as an aid during construction. We use a bespoke software to create floor designs that are efficient, cost-effective and sound from an engineering point-of-view.Although this is an office based role, the drawings created are the main instructional tool for the installer and must be actionable. Often, the precast designer acts as a main point of contact for the client, particularly if they are carrying out the installation. Some of the key skills required of a precast designer are: building knowledge, an eye for detail and excellent communication skills.
