Prior to Philips he worked as a Staff Control Systems Engineer in the Algorithms Group at Cymer, Inc. supporting Deep Ultraviolet laser product development. Prior to Cymer, Mr. Borrello was the Manager of Systems and Controls at Luminous Medical Corporation in Carlsbad, CA, a startup pioneering a new medical device technology for automatic and frequent monitoring ofblood glucose in the ICU. Before Luminous, Mr. Borrello served in technical and managerial rolesfor the design and development of control systems in both defense and medical industries includingsuch applications as pointing, acquisition and controls for an air to air laser communicationssystem, a shipboard inertial stabilization system for a rapid optical tracking telescope and pressureand flow controls for critical care ventilators. His M.S.E.E. (1987, University of Southern California, Los Angeles) is in Control Systems and he is a leading expert and consultant on the simulation software tool, VisSim (Now Altair EMBED). His primary interests are in the modeling and simulation of dynamic systems and practical rapid hardware-in-the-loopcontrols for proof-of-concept, and feasibility testing, and algorithm developmentMr. Borrello is a former Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), having served as the San Diego Chairman for the IEEE Control Systems Society and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. He has authored many technical papers, mostly on ventilator control systems and shares over a dozen patents in medical device technologies.Special experience includes: Design and development of controls for critical care ventilators, Precision control of fluid pressures, flows and mixing, dynamic systems analysis and simulations, pointing, acquisition, tracking and stabilization systems, hardware-in-the-loop control-simulations for feasibility demonstrations, product and systems development.

Design EngineerUs Divers Jan 1978 - Jan 1983US Divers is now Aqualung, and Survivair was acquired by Sperian.Designed and prototyped life support equipment and accessories for underwater, rescue, emergency and survival applications. Proposal and contract work with the U.S. Army and U.S.Bureau of Mines. With the Aqualung division, designed and developed one of the first prototype balanced secondstage regulators for sport diving. The balanced pneumatics, and variable fulcrum lever designprovided work of breathing at depth comparable to pilot valve controlled regulators. Rebuilt andWith the Survivair division designed and developed closed circuit rebreathers including a 60 minuteself rescuer, a 2 hour low profile rescue rebreather and a 2.5 hour positive pressure rebreather forthe Army. Designed and developed a microprocessor controller for a closed circuit mixed gasrebreather and a passive method for cooling closed circuit rebreathers based on lowtemperaturephase change salts.Built and operated a treadmill test facility for SCBA's and closed circuit rebreathers using a computercontrolled treadmill and instumentation to monitor and record temperature, pressure, O2, and CO2.Participated as a test subject and optimized designs based on test results. Some design work with the Commercial Diving Division. Attended Commercial Diving Workshops atthe Oceaneering International Commercial Diving Center in Wilmington, CA. Learned aboutcommercial diving operations and experienced various commercial diving rigs including excursionin a recompression chamber, diving bell in the harbor and diving a 1 atm Jim Suit in one of thediving tanks. Some contract work with the Cousteau Society design drawings for an equipment platform andshark cage used on the Clipperton Island Expedition.
