I spent three weeks in Vietnam studying, observing, and writing a collaborative ethnography with nine fellow students, five returning veterans, and three of the veterans' wives. The experiences I had in Vietnam were summated in two chapters of the pending publication. My work resolved by presenting my process of writing and ethnographical research at the Butler Undergraduate Research Conference in 2014 and a panel discussion at the International Congress for Qualitative Inquiry on the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana campus.
  • Everyday Life In Middletown
    Content Strategist And Designer
Everyday Life In Middletown Jan 2016 - May 2016
    Ball State University
Once nationally recognized as the average American small city, Muncie, Indiana, is in a post-industrial transition. Local communities are separated; the vacant factory lots that divide neighborhoods and the two-mile gap between Ball State University and South Side are only the most obvious examples. The divide is more than geographic. There are schisms across social classes and generations, races and ethnicities. Now, Middletown is in fragments: the present-day sphere of technology and service, and the echoes of an industrial age since diminished. This writes Muncie’s narrative as one of unfulfilled promises of the past — images of once-possible futures that never happened — and hopeful individuals who want to reinvigorate their communities. Our goals are to create an orchestration of unacknowledged voices and to re-characterize Muncie as a unified place. In an attempt to bridge our divides, we want to assemble a culture from the ordinary, to bring light to the everyday, and to forge a narrative for Muncie beyond its industrial history and beyond the divides that characterize its communal landscapes. We want to un-mire Middletown from its anthropological history and to hypothesize a future identity for our small city. If “democracy” can be defined as the raising of human voices to express the real conditions of real lives, to form a diverse but collective whole and to thereby determine a shared future, then everyday life in Middletown will be a radical practice of democracy. To achieve our goals, we will create a documentary that displays everyday life in an experimental way, using collaged images and local perspectives to articulate an everyday collective, bolstered by individual agency. We will also create a website that acts as an archive of the everyday — a space for local voices to express the obscure intricacies of their daily life, establishing a new culture from the ordinary.
