Matt received his M.Arch degree in spring of 2018 from the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning. While there he participated in three competitions, including Pamphlet Architecture 36, for which he and his teammates received an Honorable Mention. Matt was awarded two fellowships and one scholarship, including two travel fellowships; with one he spent three weeks in Japan looking at Metabolist architecture. The other funded a research trip to look at mass timber construction in the Pacific Northwest US and Canada. Outside of his coursework, he worked in the Fab Lab.Following graduation, he returned to Ithaca and began working as a project manager at STREAM Collaborative. Matt is now a licensed architect working at Lake Flato Architects, in San Antonio, Texas. Matt received his BA in Art: Photography from UC Santa Cruz. His work centered around the landscape, specifically medium-format black-and-white images. After school, he returned to Portland, Oregon, and worked a residential carpenter. In 1998 he opened his own woodworking business wherein he designed and built custom furniture. As the sole proprietor, he was responsible for all business-related activities, including accounting, marketing, and contracts. Matt and his wife moved to upstate New York in 2004, near Ithaca. After building a shop, he formed a partnership, West Danby Woodworks, LLC, focused on sustainable cabinetry, and joined the Ithaca Green Building Alliance. In 2011, Matt began working for the Town of Danby part-time as a Code Enforcement officer, and expanded the scope of the job to include a wide range of initiatives aimed at promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency. Among these was the Residential Energy Score Project, for which he served as the representative for the town. This county-wide project sought to develop an ordinance that would require all residential properties to have an energy audit performed before being listed for sale.
