About Cooper Marcus

Cooper Marcus is a Founding QuitCarbon to help folks upgrade to clean electric appliances that are safe for wallet, family, and planet. #ElectrifyEverything at QuitCarbon. He possess expertise in leadership, product marketing, online lead generation, engineering management, strategic partnerships and 42 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "I can't say enough nice things about Cooper. It was truly a pleasure working with him on product at Terrafuse. He has an incredible depth of knowledge and is an excellent communicator. In a very short amount of time he was able to completely transform the way we build and deliver products. I would recommend anyone in my network to Cooper.", "In my experience of 2+ years of intense collaboration, I witnessed Cooper apply his substantial aptitudes for leading by example, pro-active problem solving, coaching and encouraging peers, and generally finding a way to get any task that needed doing done to an incredibly complicated, technical, and important problem: utility-caused wildfire risk modeling and mitigation. I do not imagine the work would have succeeded without his tireless and varied contributions and would recommend him as a leader of and contributor to teams working on any number of challenging, technical, and important projects. In late 2019, I, the owner of a small utility-focused data science company, signed a contract to develop the wildfire risk planning model to be used by PG&E, the largest utility in the country then navigating bankruptcy proceedings related to its wildfire liabilities. The project was developed in partnership with Presence, where Cooper worked, Salo Sciences, satellite data and forestry experts, and PG&E's internal data science team. It was and continues to be complicated and high stakes, with contributions across organizations from diverse domains of technical specialty, requiring the support of enterprise IT and data resources, and demanding flexibility and agility to ensure that we deliver maximally performant data products on time against the backdrop of highly dynamic corporate and regulatory conditions. Cooper provided product and project management across these diverse contributors; he led all of our agile software and data science ceremonies; he supervised full stack and ops developers; he became fluent in the training, tools, departments, and staff needed to keep the data flowing and the project team productive; he provided friendly but consistent reminders of standards and expectations through team communications and even contributions to code review; he documented hard won knowledge on contractor on-boarding, data access, where to find support, and what the rest of the company needed to know about our work; he sweated the details; he asked probing questions; he even did QA and mastered our model automation system to contribute to the final push to deliveries. In brief: Cooper is a great collaborator and leader, and gets things done, whatever it takes.", and "Cooper is the best product manager I have worked with. I learned a ton about agile project management working from him, most importantly a lot about *why* agile project management is good practice. Cooper navigated our project team through an incredibly challenging environment, juggling myriad stakeholders, as well as the technical team, and dealing effectively with genuine disagreements within the team. Any project team would be blessed to have Cooper managing it."

Listed skills include Leadership, Product Marketing, Online Lead Generation, Engineering Management, and 43 others.

Group Product Manager - Data Science For Wildfire Risk

Oakland, California, Us

I provide hands-on, technical, and strategic leadership to three teams of data scientists, data engineers, analysts, and product managers. We build and improve the Wildfire Distribution Risk Model at PG&E - the risk model that is critical to prioritizing over $1.1B/year in Vegetation Management spending at PG&E (which is by far the most extensive utility vegetation management program in the world), plus hundreds of millions of dollars in annual expenditures on system hardening, support structure, transformer replacements, and more wildfire risk reduction programs.• Providing data science product and project leadership and geospatial software development management for three teams of data scientists, software engineers, data engineers, product managers, and others.• Our diverse group of data science employees and contractors needed a hands-on leader to accelerate this high-importance project. The last contractor team had failed to build a sufficiently-predictive model, and PG&E staff required tools, training, and collaboration to enable in-house model improvements.• Building advanced machine learning models for utility-caused wildfire risk to allow PG&E to make better-targeted safety improvements to their electrical distribution network.• Interfacing with numerous stakeholders, working through thick layers of bureaucracy and IT friction, keeping our loosely-affiliated team heading in a consistent direction, testing and documenting a wide variety of data sources. Product managing a geospatial machine learning software stack built on AWS SageMaker and Jupyter notebooks with custom Python libraries.• Exceptional - external review confirmed that our unique data science and collaboration approach has produced a state-of-the-art model for predicting utility-involved wildfire risk and that our model's predictive power is unusually strong.

Group / Principal Product Manager - Data Science

San Francisco, California, Us

I provide team leadership, project and product management, and business advice to help clients achieve more and delight their users/customers. My current engagement is:• Data science project leadership and geospatial software development management for PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric). A diverse group of data science employees and contractors needed a project-lead to accelerate this high-importance project. Our team builds advanced machine learning models for utility-caused wildfire risk so that PG&E can make better-targeted safety improvements in their electrical distribution network. My responsibilities have included interfacing with large numbers of stakeholders, working through thick layers of bureaucracy and IT friction, keeping our loosely affiliated team heading in a consistent direction, testing and documenting a wide variety of data sources, and product managing a geospatial machine learning software stack built on AWS SageMaker and Jupyter notebooks with custom Python libraries.Previous engagements include:• Software integration, launch leadership, and investor briefing for a leading vertically integrated cannabis company. This client needed to quickly offer delivery services in new territories as they acquired cannabis retailers and delivery permits. I acted as a combination of outsourced CTO, project manager, technical architect, and engineering manager as we identified and implemented a stack of commercial off-the-shelf software packages to power their own-branded delivery operations. • Product, project, launch management, and training for the largest school accreditation non-profit in the Western US. A team of Salesforce software engineers built a highly customized accreditation management platform for nearly a year when they lost their project lead just before launching. I stepped in and led the team successfully through finalizing the software, training the client before the client’s staff, and then to their pilot user group.

Aug 2019 - Apr 2022

General Manager (Interim)

Denver, Co, Us

A private equity firm required an interim General Manager for this recently-acquired company. The PE firm's principals needed to focus on another acquisition opportunity, so I joined to lead ScoutAPM temporarily. I worked closely with the co-founders (CEO and CTO) to refine their focus and hire new team members. I successfully implemented a series of conference sponsorships while exhibiting and leading the consulting engagement to build the firm's first unified content marketing and lead generation strategy. Revenue growth accelerated during my tenure, and customer churn slowed. At the end of the period, the PE firm principals returned their attention to a more prominent, better, faster-growing company than the one they'd acquired just six months prior.
