I learned about customer service at Howard Johnson’s, managing one in Barnstable on Cape Cod. Worst job, ever. Trained at APECO (American Photocopy Equipment Corporation) and covered Duxbury to West Bridgewater, Newport, RI and the Cape; transferred to Bridgeport, CT area and had to learn copier service. Joined two APECO guys in North Jersey at American Business Communications, and finally sold and moved home to Andover, MA to start Copilabs with my wife, Gretchen, in 1974. We had a room full of copy paper and toner, a Minolta demonstrator and a tool kit. Hired some terrific people – and raised a couple – who are key to our success.Joined Exchange Club in 1980 to give back and help out, eventually as Club president and District president. Lots of good ways to help and lots of help needed. Ran for office, wrote a novel and political stuff, taught seminars for NOMDA and wrote one on cash-flow, and rewrote another on dealership management using financial statements.Lots of dollars are wasted on copiers, printers and operating expenses.
