I solve problems. My passion for finding creative solutions to difficult problems is what motivates me to start projects, and my constant optimism is what drives me to finish them. On several occasions I challenged myself to solve a colleague’s problem. This led to several processes being automated via BASH scripts including my job of mapping Titan. I found my love for programming after discovering that a few hundred lines of code could save me countless hours of synthesizing the maps manually. This pushed me to take several computer science classes at the university where I was able to build the foundation of my software engineering knowledge. After that I was able to focus on researching Titan’s atmosphere. This involved data analysis of Titan’s seasonal haze shift where I was able to apply my new programming skills from the classroom. I then presented these findings at an international planetary science conference where I gained greater insight into the value of my research. Not long afterwards, I graduated from college, and decided to take on a software engineering internship at SEL. I Invented a novel method of detecting incipient faults via Artificial Neural Networks (i.e. predicting blackouts by recognizing the pattern of phase changes caused by weather such as the high winds oscillating the power lines in the California Wildfires that cost many lives and caused billions of dollars in damages). My internship was a great experience that taught me how to work in a professional environment with strict testing and reliability standards due to our software being used in critical public infrastructure.Around the same time that I started my internship, my parent’s company went viral. One by one I saw each of my family members quit their high-paying careers to focus in on the business. By the end of that year I decided that I should do the same, and make sure that all of their IT could handle the growth. After I made sure everything they needed was in place, I decided to pursue a computer science master's degree & H4D. More recently, I've co-founded Lumineye to make X-ray Vision for First Responders & Soldiers.

Research Development Engineering InternSel May 2014 - Jan 2015Pullman, Wa, UsResearch Engineer: Invented a novel method of detecting incipient faults via Artificial Neural Networks (i.e. predicting blackouts) after listening to an all-hands meeting where they announced SEL's biggest new product release which was a relay that could respond to faults in microseconds. Note SEL's first innovation 30 years earlier was the first all digital power relay that could respond in milliseconds. I naturally thought about how does one make the next leap to responding in nanoseconds. Well the problem is the speed of light (~1 ft per nanosecond) is too slow hence the need for prediction. SEL also happened to release new Phasor Measurement Units that could measure the sequence of phases in power lines at 1000 times per second. I connected this new capability to a new 2013 research paper I had read that applied Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) Neural Networks to sequence prediction in Speech Recognition and figured that pattern finding a sequence of voltages would apply the same whether it was a metal microphone diaphragm oscillating from someone speaking or a metal cable oscillating from the wind (cause of the California Wildfires that cost many lives and billions of dollars in damages), tree growth, ice build up, etc.• Invented a novel method to not only detect (the current gold standard) but predict blackouts to protect critical infrastructure from power spikes caused by faults or intermittent renewables, keep grids on longer (even in high winds) and direct preventative maintenance resources• Analyzed power and fault characteristics through current and voltage harmonic analysis• Learned new product development cycle focusing on the concept and development phase• Researched knowledge-based solutions including a variety of Recurrent Neural Networks including LSTMs -
