Working to secure and manage earned media placements to advance the Alliance’s strategic priorities by cultivating relationships with reporters at national media targets, managing incoming media requests and securing placement in top online and offline outlets. The Media Relations Manager will develop and pitch story ideas to reporters, with a focus on securing placement for stories that demonstrate the critical role that land conservation, land trusts and the Land Trust Alliance play in addressing significant challenges faced by our society, such as climate change. In addition, writes content for Alliance communications vehicles, including developing or editing messages and materials, such as website content, op-eds, press releases, emails or announcements.

Regular duties included maintaining relationships with reporters and rapid media response as necessary, daily social media for both our 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, and representing AWL externally including leading coalition communications calls and managing agreed-to comms strategies. Served as primary editor or approver within AWL’s editing process, ensuring AWL materials comply with both our internal style guide and AP Style. Managed AWL’s communications budget, oversaw communications consultants, served as administrator of AWL’s digital asset database, ensured that media clip files, press lists, website news page and social media sites were updated, and curated AWL’s Wild Alaska blog.

Worked as the communication lead for AWL’s Tongass National Forest and National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska campaigns, developing communications strategy, drafting op-eds and LTEs, and building relationships with members of the press. Also provided support for AWL’s Arctic Ocean and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge campaigns. Managed AWL’s social media networks and external websites, assisted with regular maintenance of AWL’s primary website and 501(c)4 website, and assisted with regular maintenance of AWL’s digital asset database. Additional duties included editing League materials, drafting materials (fact sheets, LTEs, op-eds, statements/advisories and more) and supervising communications interns.

Performed outreach to state agencies and state and local elected officials, attorneys, academics and policy experts, as well as current and former Wal-Mart employees and their families. Represented Wal-Mart Watch at 2008 Good Jobs First Conference; appeared on panel regarding Wal-Mart/Big Box accountability as it relates to state corporate income taxes and property tax assessments.
