Home Shop And Track

As crew and car chief for the team, I work in direct collaboration with the team principal and chief engineer to ensure the successful operation, and management of all vehicles and race crew operations both at the track and in the shop, as well as planning and execution of all race events.Responsibilities include multi-solution management, team communication and coordination, crash damage assessment and repair, race strategy (tires, fuel, pit stops, ect), some driver coaching and data analysis as well as proper loading and transportation of race vehicles and required equipment including tow-hauling/maneuvering of up to a 48 foot goose-neck trailer.Requirements include adaptive decision making, fluent knowledge of vehicle mechanics/dynamics, powertrain/ drivetrain/ chassis operation, tire dynamics, excellent knowledge of race craft and sanctioning body rules/regulations, exemplary communication, tact, team management, organization and planning skills.

VIPER formed a full time raced team in addition to the vehicle prep shop and learning lab in 2011. At this time I was promoted into a position as a race mechanic for the team both in the shop and at the track with shop responsibilities including all of the responsibilities of my former position as well as race vehicle maintenance, repair and prep for all vehicles operated by the team. Track responsibilities included pit crew duties, vehicle session prep, post session service, crash damage assessment and repair, and basic race engineering.Vehicles operated and managed by the team: (3) STAR CARS Formula Mazda, (2) STAR CARS FS Mazda, (3) Stohr WF-1, Phoenix-Maloy, West WX-06, (2) Superlight Coupe, and a Swiift DB-2 Sports 2000.

VIPER Engine and Drivetrain lab expanded from a learning lab into a race vehicle prep shop and dyno service center in 2009 at which time I was promoted and certified as an assistant dyno engineer supporting the chief engineer directly. Responsibilities included Superflow chassis dyno operation and management, dyno results analysis including baseline horsepower/torque verification and spec. race series horsepower/torque verification, equipment service and maintenance, and vehicle service. For the race prep I was responsible for general mechanic services such as fluids changes, engine maintenance, parts replacement and track prep services. I would operate the dyno and provide results reporting during dyno testing, and would assist during vehicle tuning for engine types ranging from motorcycle to rotary engines.

VIPER Engine and Drivetrain lab is a university affiliated learning lab in which students who are studying mechanical and race engineering can gain hands-on experience to supplement their theoretical studies.I was hired during my time as a student in Mechanical Engineering at the university, and began by providing general shop mechanic services. I was responsible for basic equipment service and maintenance, vehicle service, and dyno support.

Nascar Southern Modified Tour (Fly-In)

The #07 Modified amassed over 200 victories, driven by NASCAR Busch veterans Sam Ard, Tommy Houston, NASCAR Winston Cup Driver Jimmy Spencer and Bowman Gray Stadium Champion "Satch" Worley. Working as a fly-in for the team, I provided general race mechanic services and acted as a tire carrier during the race events. Responsibilities included pre-cycling and engine start prep, tire temperature monitoring, and tire carrier duties for 2-man tire carrier crew - wide-5 lugs, pit stops under 30 seconds in race conditions.

Bonneville Salt Flats

#71 Autodesk Dodge Charger driven by Russ Wicks set a new land speed record of 244.9 miles per hour for the then current NASCAR Cup Car during Bonneville Speed week.During the event, I provided general race mechanics services and was responsible for engine startup and shut down including precyling and heating engine oil, engine start sequence, engine shutdown sequence, and critical component care.*Developed an improvised aerodynamic method to resolve salt accumulation - after each speed pass, salt deposits were "sculpted" to form under-body tunneling to improve airflow and increase high speed stability without violating NASCAR templates.

Martinsville, Va And Trackside

PHCC Motorsports operates a NASCAR Late Model Weekly Pro/AM series competitor, and is affiliated with Patrick Henry Community College for the benefit of students attempting the Associates degree in Motorsports Technology.During my time with this team I participated in the fabrication of the chassis, primarily tube bending and general vehicle build-up. I was responsible for tire care and preparation and served as both the tire engineer and a tire carrier when need during race events.
