My research program focuses on clinical-translation studies of neurodegenerative diseases, including frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and Parkinson’s disease (PD). I use a bioinformatic or “big data” approach in an effort to improve our understanding of the biological basis of neurodegenerative conditions. This is accomplished through the use of multimodal approaches (MRI/DTI/PET imaging, genetics, biofluids, neuropsychological/clinical datasets) and the application of novel analytic approaches (sparse canonical correlation, graph-theory, robust regression). The work in my laboratory emphasizes biologically-grounded hypotheses to motivate the selection of modalities and analytic techniques in order to develop robust biomarkers that can be used to better diagnose neurodegenerative diseases, accelerate drug discovery of disease-modifying agents, and to define essential clinical trial endpoint measures. My research program is poised to translate biomarkers to facilitate precision medicine approaches for individualized treatments of patients with neurodegenerative disease.
