Corey Olsen is Founder and President of Signum University. A medievalist and well-known Tolkien scholar, Corey leveraged his popular Tolkien Professor podcast to experiment with teaching in a virtual environment. His work led to the Silmarillion Seminar, a prototype for what would become Signum University’s teaching model. With the seminar’s success, Corey went on to establish Signum University, a quality distance education graduate school open to students from around the world. Since opening its doors in 2011, the university has taught hundreds of Master’s program students in Literature and Language while the Mythgard Institute, the university’s literary satellite, has continued to offer free programs in speculative and classical fiction, including Exploring The Lord of the Rings, an innovative course on Tolkien’s trilogy that takes place within The Lord of the Rings Online, a massive multiplayer role playing game. Today Corey is focused on the future of higher education. Excited about the tremendous potential benefits of online education and deeply concerned about the student debt crisis, he actively questions the effectiveness of traditional higher education. Building on the success of Signum University, he is exploring new pedagogical and administrative models that could offer students excellent opportunities at reasonable cost.
