 Along with a group of orthopedic nurses and staff, I opened this new unit specializing in orthopedic trauma and reconstruction, as well as general medical/surgical patient care. 4-5 patient assignments A challenging, physical, fast paced work environment caring for patients upon admission from the emergency room, direct admissions, and post-surgical Some duties included caring for patients with chest tubes, enteral feeding tubes, gastrostomy, jejunostomy and nasogastric tubes, wound drains including Jackson-Pratt, accordion, and negative pressure wound therapy, Foley and rectal catheters, TPN/lipid administration, IV and PICC line medication administration, maintenance and care, epidural medication administration and maintenance, extensive dressing changes and wound care, maintenance of orthopedic devices including external fixators and halos, skin graft and muscle flap maintenance and care, blood and blood product transfusions including auto transfusion devices, traction set up and maintenance, including bucks and skeletal traction, Extensive PO, IV, Sub-cutaneous and IM medication administration, able to read and document telemetry monitoring Worked closely with rehabilitation staff to prepare the patient for discharge home or to a facility Provided necessary teaching to the patient and patient’s support system to ensure the best possible outcome for recovery Worked closely with physicians, pharmacists, OT, PT, speech therapy and care managers in a team oriented setting Initially used paper charting before transitioning into a paperless charting system Proficient in the use of CERNER electronic medical system as well as CPOE (computerized physician order entry) and was present for the roll out of both of these systems Delegation when appropriate and open communication with the entire health care team
