Gundersen Health System is collaborating with an agriculture organization on a unique renewable energy project. The health system is partnering with Organic Valley headquartered in La Farge, Wis., to build the Cashton Greens Wind Farm. Once complete, the two-turbine wind farm is expected to generate nearly 5 megawatts of energy—enough electricity to power 1,000 homes each year.

Gundersen Health System is harnessing energy from the wind to create electricity. The La Crosse, Wis.-based health system built a two-turbine wind farm just north of Lewiston, Minn. The wind farm is generating 4.95 megawatts of energy—enough to power about 1,400 homes.

When you think “landfill” you probably don’t think “renewable energy source.” But, that’s just what the La Crosse County landfill in Wisconsin has turned into for Gundersen Health System. The Health System teamed with the County on a site that uses waste biogas created from the waste at the landfill and turns it into electricity, heating and cooling.

With the nickname “The Dairy State,” it’s a given that Wisconsin has a lot of cows. Those cows in turn create a lot of waste. Gundersen Health System is turning that waste into a usable renewable energy source. Gundersen constructed a dairy digester on a single site dairy farm near Sun Prairie, WI.

A unique partnership that turns cow waste from farms into renewable energy. Gundersen Health System and Dane County in Wisconsin are partnering with three farm families in Dane County on the GL Dairy Biogas site.

“Healthcare” and “brewery” aren’t two words that typically go together. But, Gundersen Health System based in La Crosse, WI, entered into a unique renewable energy partnership with a local brewing company, City Brewery. In 2009, the two organizations powered up a combined heat and power site.The renewable energy company uses waste biogas discharged from City Brewery’s waste treatment process and turns it into electricity.
