I’m a CHES certified behavioral scientist, professor of public health, and department chair with over two decades of experience in mixed-methods research. Over the past two decades, my research trajectory has evolved from (1) developing, implementing and evaluating cancer prevention and control interventions to (2) studying exposure science in the physical and social environment in New York City to (3) improving understanding about how emerging social media (TikTok, YouTube, Instagram) addresses propagated epidemics and chronic illness. Collectively, this work has common themes that have and will continue to define the nature and scope of my research, namely translating basic and clinical research into concrete, actionable recommendations for change to improve population health, reducing health disparities among low-income urban and global populations, describing physical and social determinants of health and improving understanding about ways to help people make informed decisions about health. The methods used in my research have included focus groups, interviews, surveys, social listening, and in-depth content analysis. A major focus of my current work relates to content of information on the internet with a focus on misinformation, disinformation and digital crisis interaction. I served as the COVID-19 Section Editor for two years and as an Editorial Board member for three years at the Journal of Medical Internet Research.My work, which has relied on both quantitative and qualitative methods comprises over 150 original empirical studies, which are reported in over 270 peer-reviewed scientific publications .
