During my five years at Penn State Altoona, external research and creative activity funding increased by over 300% from $300,000 to over $1.2M annually. I expanded support for students and faculty participating in undergraduate research by creating the Undergraduate Research Coordinator position and Altoona Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (ASURF) program, expanding undergraduate research experiences to over 200 students per year. Formed an Undergraduate Research Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (UR DEI) committee that initiated new programming to increase the diversity of students conducting undergraduate research and support those students throughout their time at our campus. Initiated, identified funding for, and contributed to the long overdue renovation of our nanomaterials and optics research labs. Expanded my office to include support for campus-wide out-of-classroom learning experiences such as internships, community-based studies and entrepreneurship. Supported the launch of our new Engineering Leadership Development Program and complementary Engineering Leadership Society. For the past three years, I also served on the Pennsylvania Science Olympiad Board of Directors and as the State Tournament Director which has brought over 1,000 high school and middle school students to the Altoona campus each April for their state-wide competition.

  • Portland State University
    Co-Founder, Research Based-Design Intiative
Portland State University Jan 2012 - Sep 2018
The Research-Based Design Initiative transformed traditional lecture-based building science and technology courses into a series of on-going, graduate level seminars that revolve around two primary activities: (1) students conduct building science research of relevance to a project currently under design in a firm and (2) students are embedded in project teams where they attend all interdisciplinary meetings for the course of a term to witness and document interdisciplinary collaboration. In this unique way, students became contributing members of a design team and building science experts on issues relevant to current practice. For the architecture firms involved, working with universities allows practicing architects the ability to utilize a deeper level of research expertise in the design process and access resources not typically available in practice. One of the most exciting outcomes of this collaboration have been the semi-annual research symposiums where students present their work to representatives from all of the participating firms, creating a dialog around pressing building science issues with students, faculty and practitioners.
