About Corey Reese

I invest in and build companies with talented, product-centric development teams. Most recently, I co-founded Wholesail with 6 friends & former colleagues that I’ve worked with over the last decade across four companies. Before founding the company, we spent nearly a year doing market research and customer discovery together to identify an opportunity to modernize payment and communication between buyers and sellers in wholesale trade. Prior to starting Wholesail, I created and led OpenTable’s Marketplace Products Group, which includes its search, recommendation, advertising and loyalty products.Previously, I was the co-founder and CEO of Ness Computing, a startup that built a machine learning based recommendation engine for restaurants, which was acquired by OpenTable (now a part of Booking Holdings). At Ness, I led product development, strategy, recruiting and financing. Prior to starting Ness, I was a founding Associate at Alsop Louie Partners, where I led the firm’s campus associate program at Berkeley, Stanford and MIT and sourced early stage investments including Gowalla (Facebook) and Twitch (Amazon).Specialties: team building, product development, mobile user experience design, marketplaces, payments, search engines, recommendation engines, location based data, messy data problems, machine learning, advertising platforms, a/b testing, restaurant technologies, product strategy, new product launches, competitive strategy, brand building, business development, venture capital financing, mergers and acquisitions, angel investing, single origin coffee.

  • Opentable
Director Of Product Management, Marketplace Products
    Opentable Sep 2015 - Mar 2017
    San Francisco, California, Us
After a year and a half at OpenTable, in an effort to improve the company’s business model and generate new revenue lines, my team created a new marketplace product group that spanned initiatives across our consumer and restaurant facing products. I worked with the PMs, engineers, designers and sales leaders in this group to develop and execute product and go to market strategies for new initiatives around advertising, paid reservations, delivery, gift cards and our loyalty program. These efforts ultimately resulted in growing an eight-figure revenue base at double-digit rates year over year. I also worked closely with our architecture team to design and implement OpenTable’s in house A/B testing system using best practices from our sister company, Booking.com, and its approach to experimentation. While at OpenTable I recruited over a half dozen engineers, PMs and designers from my network to join the company.

Served as product lead in redesigning and rearchitecting OpenTable’s search index, ranking engine and consumer search experience. I was also responsible for product leadership of OpenTable’s content (photos, reviews and editorial) programs and its loyalty (points) program and had the pleasure of managing two talented PMs that were a part of my group. My group’s focus was on using OpenTable’s unique signals and datasets to enhance diners’ confidence when making decisions about which restaurant to dine at.

As product lead, I worked with our team to build a search engine and consumer product on top of a custom index that used location, social and preference signals to generate and rank personalized search results. Our investors included Alsop Louie Partners, Khosla Ventures, SingTel, American Express and NTT Docomo. Ness was acquired by OpenTable in early 2014 to form a new data science group that leveraged Ness’ team, technology and product approach to rearchitect and redesign its search backend and mobile apps.
