Once upon a time, I got paid to watch TV and movies and talk about them with college students, often while I was also teaching them how to write effectively in a variety of genres. It was as amazing (and fun!) as you might think. Watching students wrestle with and apply new philosophical concepts that helped them understand how their favorite pop culture worked on multiple levels and could actually influence society was incredibly rewarding. Eventually, I became an academic director. I managed an intercultural education program and a writing center, putting my interdisciplinary background to use and leveraging some of my key strengths: strategic thinking, research and analysis, professional writing, and building authentic relationships. I was able to put my passion for DEIA+ into daily practice as I worked to create more inclusive educational experiences across campus, and I regularly developed content for a wide variety of audiences.Because I'm so familiar with academia, I'm committed to helping increase equity and access within it through my efforts as a DEIA+ consultant, but I also enjoy working with professionals in other industries. I love traveling and assisting groups who are committed to improving their employees' everyday experiences--the challenge of finding the best strategies for their distinct fields invigorates me. Still, though I'm no longer a traditional academic, I haven't left the field entirely. I recently finished a nearly two-year project as lead editor for a collection on a popular teen drama series. With an international and interdisciplinary roster of authors--including some early career scholars--the book represents so much of my ideas regarding best practices in professional writing and editing.
