Of all the television commercial projects I’ve produced and directed from Coke Cola to Skittles to the constipation pill Colace, Colace was the most fun and the most successful. I can look at a storyboard from an agency and know immediately if it’s going to just move on the screen and go nowhere. Sadly, advertisers don’t know much better. With Colace and their advertiser, Roberts Pharmaceutical, they were willing to take a chance with my advertising-through-entertainment even though they were scared shitless. I wrote, produced and directed 2 broadcast national commercials based on Frankenstein and Vampires. I was the agency, production company and media buyer. Over a two year period Roberts had over $500 million in sales - a direct result of 2 commercials. They made so much $ that when I pitched the third commercial, they laughed so hard then told me I helped make them so much $ that they sold the company. I remember the VP of marketing telling me,”Corky, I’d love to tell all my friends that I’m working on Madison Ave but you’ve done such a great job I can’t go anywhere else.” I didn’t need a pat on the back but success is a beautiful thing. Going outside the box is way beyond what it’s cracked up to be if the client lets you come up with wild stuff that entertains and sells the product. What a hoot! I also remember being at Leo Burnett and having creatives tell me their agency would never let that kind of commercial go out.
