Cormac Walsh is an honours graduate in Drama and Theatre Studies from the Samuel Beckett School of Drama at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). His Dissertation The Open Stage Project: Practice, Objectives and Outcomes was based on a production he directed for The Central Remedial Clinic, Clontarf for an international Arts Festival in Athens, in November 1999.Since he graduated in 2000 he has specialised in working with people with physical and intellectual disabilities in the north east Dublin area.People with physical and/or intellectual disabilities are most commonly disenfranchised from mainstream education. Their exposure to classic Drama works is generally significantly limited. In terms of Drama production contemporary Drama is also commonly posited as beyond their ken. When Cormac started working in centres for people with significant levels of disability it was generally suggested that he would conduct “role plays” around the area and notion of being disabled. Cormac immediately thought this was a poor utilisation of his skills and a very limiting and patronising outlook on the expectations of the people he was working with.Anthropologically he evaluated the knowledge, exposure and appreciation of Drama among the groups he was working with. Dramaturgically he tested the groups appreciation of classical and contemporary Drama texts.. In the last decade he has been delighted to introduce the various groups he’s worked with to classical and contemporary texts. Classically these include The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, Dr.Faustus, Wizard of OZ, Alice In Wonderland Dracula. Contemporary texts include Star Wars, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Titanic, Casablanca and Grease. Many of these productions have been staged for the general public at the Samuel Beckett Theatre TCD.Cormac’s work with the Central Remedial Clinic’s Central Characters also includes an original history play MXIV: The Battle of Clontarf.Specialties: Special Needs Drama Teaching. Theatre Production.
