Shelter Music Boston is an organization that seeks to ameliorate the homeless problem in Boston by taking classical music off the concert stage and bringing it to those who don't have access to it. With them, I managed their social media accounts, in particular Twitter and Facebook, posting information related to the organization, pictures and recordings of performances, comments from guests of the shelters, information about performers, and notifications of upcoming events. I also assisted in taking photos and videos of their performances. Further, I assisted in the process of revamping their website by exploring various ways to integrate blog content and RSS feeds and creating in-depth profiles of each of the concert performers.

It is a general consensus that musical theater and opera are uniquely distinct art genres and that liking one precludes liking the other. In reality, the perceived barrier between the two is one easily torn down if you are willing to explore and broaden your own horizons by truly listening and feeling the musical productions you are watching. Let me show you how I define a musical and an opera and convince you why they are not as different as you may think.

The internship focused on using social media outlets to create buzz and raise awareness about the decrease in arts funding, with the hope of reversing that trend, starting with the 2014 Massachusetts gubernatorial race. I routinely wrote blog posts and managed Twitter and Facebook postings on organizational activities and other notable events and stories pertaining to various Boston arts communities.

University Of North Carolina At Chapel Hill

As music director of the UNC Clef Hangers all-male a cappella group, I served as the sole and final authority on the musical direction of the group. I led our bi-weekly three hour rehearsals, which involved teaching musical and vocal techniques, in addition to conducting the group and making all interpretive decisions. I was responsible for coordinating the arranging of all our music, by either arranging songs myself or delegating those responsibilities to other capable arrangers in the group. I was also responsible for the scheduling, organization, and supervision of the recording process of our 16th studio album; I was involved in all steps involved in that processes from initial recordings to the later mixing and mastering of those tracks. I prepare the group for and lead the group at around 90 private engagements and 4-6 large concerts (between 1000-2000 people) in a given year, primarily in the state of North Carolina, but also in other venues along the East Coast.

One of the primary projects of the research lab I worked at was centered around learning more about the mechanisms behind HPV and the progression from infection of a cell to tumor formation. I was responsible for coming up with my own sub-project that furthered their research and could be completed by the end of the summer. My supervisor gave me various research papers to start with and essentially told me to find a question or problem and map out a way to answer or solve it over the twelve week internship period. I was also given the freedom to pursue other areas of interest as long as I had the time and was getting results for my primary project. At the end of the summer, I gave a 30 minute lecture on my research findings to my lab and various faculty members in the department of microbiology. I was also responsible for assisting my supervisor and one of her visiting colleagues with their research pursuits; I familiarized myself with their areas of research and assisted them in laboratory procedures or ran tests for them if they did not have time to run the tests themselves.
