He was the First Runner Up. The following year he was the winner. At the age of twenty he graduated from the GFD Academy of Design and was the winner of four prizes including Best Garment on Show, Best Garment in a Theme Category and Best Student. In 1994 he entered the South African Fashion Group’s Young Designer competition, a competition held on both regional and national levels. He was not only chosen as a finalist (by winning the regional competition), but went on to be awarded the prestigious title of Best Young Designer - 1994. At the age of twenty-six he started lecturing part-time at the GFD Design Emporium and by the age of twenty-eight was given the responsibility of running daily operations. GFD was the oldest private Fashion Design college in South Africa at the time and a year later Corné was part owner and executive partner. Corné joined the Raffles Design Institute in 2005 as a lecturer in Fashion Design. His appointment in 2008 as Academic Director of Raffles Design International – Bombay, was a popular as well as financially lucrative choice for the Singaporean based Raffles Education Corporation. When asked what the secret of survival is, Corné quipped: “Longevity is not proof of one’s ability, passion is.”
