Drenalina was a boutique hosting company with a focus on operational management of high-traffic websites and applications (1+ mln visits per month).Through the Drenalina Cloud platform, we offered "opinionated" VMs that acted as modular building blocks for setups that were both redundant and horizontally scalable. The Drenalina Cloud was mainly targeted at CMSes and highly dynamic websites like e.g. classifieds.During the years, I designed several application clusters involving Layer 7 proxying, load balancing and graceful failover. Protocols and technologies I have been using on a daily basis include:- DNS (using PowerDNS)- HTTP (using Nginx for load-balancing, filtering and protecting several types of traffic)- MySQL/Percona Server (using both traditional master-slave replication and InnoDB Group Replication, in conjunction with ProxySQL and GitHub Orchestrator)- noSQL databases like MongoDB, memcached, Redis, Solr and ElasticSearch.- NFS, FUSE and LizardFS for software-defined-storage - Linux virtualisation (using KVM) and containers- OpenNebula for cloud orchestration- Sensu, Graphite, Grafana for monitoringFrom an architectural perspective, my job was to ensure that the resulting setup would not just meet the clients' request, but that the overall design complied with the best practices in terms of maintenance and scalability.From a Site Reliability Engineering perspective, I shared on-call responsibilities with other engineers, which included proactive and reactive actions, post-mortem analysis and design /implementation of architectural fixes. This often included analysis of the client's application behaviour and recommendation of changes to the application code.References available upon request.

GoPC was a provider of cloud VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) with a strong focus on endpoint security. My role involved helping clients consolidate their existing office automation infrastructure onto the cloud, in order to leverage the agility and potential cost savings inherent in a cloud model. I was also instrumental in helping GoPC reuse its technology to create an award-winning security product called BankVault (see the Patents section below).

At Qwéntes I worked as a frontend developer and I dealt mostly with projects in the fashion and design industry. Tools of the trade were PHP / HTML5 / CSS / and JS libraries like jQuery, on top of a multi-language, multi-site CMS called MAUI, which was developed by Qwentes itself using CodeIgniter.Notable clients: Emilio Pucci (part of LVMH group), Reggiani Lighting, Fineco Bank, Cini&Nils.

During this timeframe I worked mainly on two popular Italian news outlets, Corriere.it and Gazzetta.it. This was a defining moment in my career. In such a large corporate environment I learned a lot - sometimes the hard way - about attention to details and how a small technical glitch can cause big issues at a later stage because of the scale at which a major news outlet operates.My role there shifted gradually from pure front-end developer (using XHTML / CSS / Javascript / jQuery) to operations consultant and team leader. I was also responsible for interviewing candidates and mentoring new developers.I attended two courses in Leadership and Public Speaking and both of them were very helpful when my role shifted away from the technical area.

Between 2004 and 2006, I contributed to launch eDentist.it, which eventually became the largest community in Italy for dentists, featuring a mailing list with more than 100 million messages sent per year and a B2B ecommerce service with thousands of medical product, from small consumables to high-value gear like digital radiographic equipment. As an ecommerce manager, I gained quite a lot of experience in negotiations with suppliers, sponsors and clients.
