Summer Intern
As an intern at Kaye Publicity, I was able to see the marketing side of novels. We got to see the blue line copies as well as the finished copy of all the books. For the social media campaign part of the internship, I created posts for Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook. These posts were all tailored in voice for the company or the author I was posting for and aimed at the specific demographics of each social media site. Then, I was in charge of aggregating blogs that had a strong following and could help promote a book we were pitching. For the traditional media campaign, I was in charge of finding contacts of each blogger, newspaper, or magazine. The final aspect of my time at Kaye was the writing portion. I created press releases to send to all the contacts interesting in publishing pieces on the book. I also pitched the book to these magazines and newspaper contacts with a specific tie-in for why our author's novel and knowledge on certain subjects was perfect for their publication.
Virtual Intern
Although I am not geographically close, Melbourne-based Children's Author Hazel Edwards suggested we test a virtual internship after I sent her my resume. We had a weekly Skype meetings, in which we discussed the business side of writing that Hazel takes part in like photoshoots, literary festivals, and interviews. These discussions allowed me to understand more about being an author. As I was in England, we were also able to discuss the differences between Australia's Style Manual, Oxford Style Guide, and Chicago Manual of Style and how these differences affect global marketing. The tasks assigned covered all aspects of publishing as I created covers for her reprint of the novel "Stalker", created posts for her page about graphics, transferred her books to E-Pubs, and copy edited one of her novels. This opportunity allowed me to further my writing skills and knowledge of the international publishing market while assisting Hazel in her current and upcoming projects.
Student Reporter
During high school, I had the privilege of working as a student reporter for the Chicago Tribune. The imprint, The Mash, was run by students for students in the greater Chicago area. Once a month, I would go to the Tribune building to meet with a group of students. We pitched ideas for story, discussed current events that affected high schoolers, and created copy for the articles. As well as writing articles, I got to attend a journalist conference and learn more about the newspaper business and the hierarchy of positions within a company like the Tribune.
