Managed an additional $10 million in funds for a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) research portfolio focused on prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV. Oversaw a staff of one whose responsibilities were to track program spending, meet grant-reporting requirements, and to support our Zambia-based operations at four field sites. Maintained open lines of communication with staff member, facilitated trainings, and provided support in order for our team to be successful.

Kimana, Oliotokitok District, Kenya

Supported in the Kenya Field Practicum Program, which provided students the opportunity to design a research study and gain field experience in a resource poor settings, for 4 consecutive summer programs. Collaborated with the course professor to develop the course curriculum, and teach four orientation sessions focusing on cultural sensitivity, cross-cultural communication, and community health programs. Assisted the professor and students to identify study outcomes, survey design, training translators, data collection, and data analysis. Engaged with the local community members and tribal leaders to gain approvals for the students to administer household surveys. Organized focus group discussions and in-depth-interviews with key ministry of health personnel, local organizations, local leaders, and community members.

Organized department film series, guest speakers, journal clubs and meetings for over 150 international health MPH students, faculty and staff. Coordinated a university-wide event with MTV International Corporate Social Responsibility. Managed and maintained student and faculty databases to streamline department event, course and budget information for efficient use and tracking throughout the academic year. Researched public health job and fellowship opportunities and communicated weekly with students and faculty regarding the opportunities as well as events and pertinent announcements. Provided logistical support for over 30 faculty members by organizing and tracking course materials and support staff, both domestically and internationally. Advertised, recruited and managed the Zambia Southern Province Internship Program, which matched selected BUSPH students with 6-month long international practicum placements. Selected to develop the Pharmaceuticals, Assessment, Management and Policy Program at BUSPH, with a mission to grow the program by increasing student enrollment, developing fundraising strategies, improving the program’s visibility, and planning program lectures and workshops for students. Organized and administered applications and maintained correspondence with applicants for department hiring.

Tracked program spending, and projected future expenditures based on spending patterns for program planning. Administered sourcing and procurement of project supplies to be exported to the field. Regularly corresponded with 8 federal and non-federal funding organizations, and managed contract deadlines and amendments for each program. Liaised with the Boston University Institutional Review Board (IRB) and local ethical boards to develop study protocols and ensure all studies meet ethical standards. Biannually recruited, interviewed and selected interns for the Zambia Internship Program, which sends 4-8 graduate student interns to Zambia to gain skills and experience as well as provide support to our field programs. Corresponded with international partners to ensure programs met their needs.

Providence, Rhode Island Area

Conducted six key informant interviews with state agencies and housing organizations regarding current resources, housing needs, and future goals for housing focusing on low-income communities to determine the best infrastructure of the Alliance. Established a steering committee and worked together to develop mission, vision and values statements, as well as the bylaws and organizational structure. Organized and facilitated “Rhode Island Alliance for Healthy Homes (RIAHH) Community Forum” attended by >100 stakeholders in housing, health and energy. Major accomplishment: RIAHH (launched in 2014) provides an avenue for collaboration to: 1) develop workforce resources and training; 2) examine gaps in housing legislation; 3) compile data for a statewide database; 4) analyze and recommend improvements on housing systems; and 5) develop a communication platform for all stakeholders.PRESENTATION:“Rhode Island Alliance for Healthy Homes” Boston University Practicum Finale. Monteverde, Costa Rica

Assisted instructors by preparing educational material and activities for students traveling from the United States to Monteverde, Costa Rica. Contributed logistical and technical support for classes and excursions. Led group laboratories, discussions, and activities related to the themes of energy, sustainability, tropical conservation biology and natural history, as well as graded assignments pertaining to these topics. Responsibilities also include organizing, packing, hauling, and repeatedly performing inventory of the materials while traveling. Aided students in transition from their U.S. universities and lifestyles to the unique learning environment of the Monteverde program, including field trip settings, homestays, internships, and to life in Monteverde.

Co-authored a white paper, “Building Capacity for Non-Utility Scale Renewable Energy in Rhode Island” that was later presented to the Rhode Island Governor, House of Representatives and Senate to be used to make legislative decisions. Researched the historical and technical backgrounds of hydropower in Rhode Island. Projected potential sources of renewable energy in the state through cost-benefit and cost-effective analyses. Collaborated with my peers to coordinate and promote the 2008 Rhode Island Energy Solutions Expo (http://www.rienergyexpo.org/) for over 1,000 Rhode Island resident attendees.
