Design School X is an innovative next generation high school model incubated at the Stanford d.school. In my role, I led the collaborative design of a sustainable school culture of equity, innovation, and healing by systematizing equity and creativity throughout the school culture, curriculum, assessment, and support practices. I designed and facilitated learning experiences using critical creative thinking, empathy, craftsmanship, systems thinking, and equity-centered design thinking.

As an Academic Coach, I supported and guided students who struggled with executive functioning in creating and practicing systems for planning, prioritizing, goal-setting, follow through, and organization. I advised students, families, and teachers about effective strategies for students’ unique learning profiles and communicated with parents weekly about students’ needs, goals, progress, and action plans.

As a founding math teacher, I designed inquiry and project-based curriculum to empower students with the tools and mindset necessary to creatively identify, analyze, and solve problems. The goal was for students to use mathematics to engage with the world by making sense of structures and patterns in projects that involved social justice, equity, art, and working with wood and metal in our 21st century shop.

As a 7th grade advisor, I collaborated with my grade-level team to develop curriculum for our students’ social and emotional growth. In addition, I supported my advisory with goal-setting, self-reflection, and public speaking skills in preparation for their student-led conferences and public Exhibitions of Learning.

The focus of this year-long teacher training program was based on the Critical Pedagogy Framework (CPF) developed by Paulo Freire. This pedagogical approach focused on developing skills such as cultural competency and inclusivity. My colleagues and I facilitated workshops for our East Bay School for Boys faculty based on this professional development and piloted lessons in our 7th grade advisory curriculum to help students develop awareness of skills such as innovation, adaptability, critical analysis, cross-cultural communication, and teamwork.

As Director of Curriculum and Culture, I coached and mentored new teachers by observing classes and giving feedback. I led teachers in developing engaging curriculum and recommended strategies to support diverse group of learners. I also facilitated effective collaboration and communication within teaching teams.

As the elementary school math specialist, I designed engaging, weekly workshops for small groups of students to deepen their conceptual understanding and procedural fluency through opportunities to apply creative and critical thinking. In the first grade classroom, I practiced designing and facilitating curriculum and culture while simultaneously earning my multiple subject teaching credential and M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction.
