Profile bio

About Cort Spellman

I like to build products/tools empower people to do good, new things or do things more easily :)Tools should be reliable, efficient, and a joy to use! I get there through understanding and addressing root problems and continuous improvement. Some examples:• A Spark system had jobs that shelled out to native executables for performance. While developing a new such "plugin", I noticed it processing the same input multiple times. On deeper investigation, many jobs in production were doing the same, offsetting performance gains. I demonstrated the duplicated work to the CTO and then fixed the problem, reducing compute cost.• A data feed processor frequently stopped and was not restarted by the service orchestrator. I instrumented the processing to understand both it and the feed behavior. I proposed a hypothesis about the feed behavior that was confirmed by the feed company. I used additional info from that call to simplify the processing. I used appropriate Node.js promise constructs to stop the CPU process when data processing stopped so the service orchestrator could restart the processing.• I built a tablet app, in collaboration with a radiologist, to standardize instructions to x-ray patients and techs in order to improve image consistency. I named the audio instruction files according to the type of x-ray, the language spoken, and the timing cues. This allowed the radiologist to add new instructions and translations and to adjust the timing cues from the test device itself, without the need to change and deploy code or even to coordinate with me.• On that same tablet app, I built a custom analog egg-timer view to cue the x-ray tech to take the image. It used 2D rotations and translation, ran smoothly on low-end Android devices, and smoothly transitioned through device rotations.
