Profile bio

About Cory Buckband, Ph.D.

I am an applied anthropologist working in education and public policy. My research interests and evaluation perspectives bring together innovative and justice-oriented methodologies with critical social and cultural perspectives on language, race, education, and identity. As a Doctoral student, I studied multilingual education and multilingualism, language policy in educational and family contexts, and transformative approaches to family and community engagement. I hope to support research and evaluation initiatives by applying my skills in both qualitative (critical ethnography, discourse analysis, MaxQDA) and quantitative (Qualtrics survey design, ESRI ArcGIS) methodologies. For my dissertation study, I conducted a yearlong critical ethnographic study of a trilingual immersion (Mandarin, Spanish, English) charter elementary school in Arizona. This study used interviews, ethnographic observations, and arts-based research to explore the program’s implementation, children's identity development, and the implications of intertwining eliteness, language education, and charter schooling. My approach to research and inquiry is guided by a set of antiracist, anti-colonial, and social justice-oriented principles and values. In this way, I endeavor to be a responsible and engaged researcher, and I remain committed to the future I have set for myself by continuously and dialectically reflecting on areas for both professional and (inter)personal growth.I have always been fascinated by education and love the praxis of teaching. Before pursuing my Ph.D., I taught a range of secondary social studies courses at a multilingual and multicultural charter high school in central Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A., including two Advanced Placement courses (Human Geography & Psychology). I am a White Jewish cishet male and an elective sequential multilingual (English, Spanish, Hebrew, Yiddish) who was raised in Van Nuys, California.
