I designed and taught the following classes: • Server-side Dynamic Web Development. (Taught 2x) A practical introduction to database-backed server-side web development with JavaScript. Tools taught: git, github, Node.js, mongodb, express. • Hacking the Browser. (Taught 4x times) In this class we push the limits of browser tech to subvert the usual browsing experience. We build bookmarklets and Chrome extensions. The course includes a whirlwind tour through front-end technologies (DOM API, JavaScript and CSS) and a deeper dive into extension APIs and other technologies to connect the browser with the world outside it. Created one of the first widespread for-fun VOIP projects. Appeared on NPR, BBC, Digg frontpage, BoingBoing, NYT, KROQ, made more than a quarter million calls before being shut down by the FCC.

Sole developer responsible entire HTTP stack for hundred-server deployments, from server architecture to high availability to database administration to code writing/testing and deployment. Used Ruby, Node, Rails, Sinatra, Mongo, Redis, MySQL, ec2.

Designed and implemented general system/application architecture, lead and mentored the rest of the dev team. Used Flask (python) on the back-end and Backbone.js on the front-end.

Wrote prototype and first and second from-scratch rewrites of the app. Grew a tech team from 1 (me) to 8 in a year and a half, and pageviews from none to 10s of millions. PHP, Ruby, Rails, javascript, server administration, db administration.Outside.in was acquired by AOL in 2011 and its technology stack was used to power parts of Patch.com back-end infrastructure.

Coded nonstop. Built a highly scalable VOIP architecture. Designed a user interface and VOIP call scheduler/multiplexer api.

Quasi-internal strategy consulting. Forecasted sales trends and did special projects to investigate potential changes to company website.I worked in the Order Operations department which is essentially the last resort for customers whose orders have encountered trouble (e.g. order-of-magnitude-greater-than-expected delivery delays). After they escalated past frontline customer support I'd work with them to get their orders back on track. I learned a lot of lessons about how to compassionately and patiently communicate with highly agitated customers.
