Began using Urchin (first iteration of Google Analytics) to reduce advertising costs and improve ROI. In 2004, added blogs to elevate inn’s primary site in search engine rankings. In 2005, recognizing increased competition and keyword “miming” in the travel space, began building e-mail lists of likely inn visitors, increasing summer travel business by 30%. Also in 2005, developed http://www.southernvermontinn.com, http://www.countryinnvermont, and other sites to drive traffic to the inn’s primary site. The net effect of this approach was to reduce pay-per-click costs by 70%, increase direct traffic to the primary site, improve forward bookings by as much as 90 days and length-of-stay summer reservations by as much as 3 days per visit. All of these marketing improvements permitted us to increase room rates by $40 per night. In 2006, we put the inn on the market, and it was under contract within 60 days.
