Located in the heart of the world's manufacturing and electronics capital in Shenzhen, China, HAXLR8R is a leader in helping founders make physical things and turn that passion into companies. I have served as a mentor to the companies since the first iteration of the program, discussing our experience prototyping, building, and selling a new product with a significant hardware component.

Worked for five months with the IDEO San Francisco studio as the Startup in Residence. Managed the Catalia Health team and interactions with many of our great IDEO colleagues during the time we were in the studio. Catalia Health worked with IDEO on designing our new robotic personal healthcare companion, on marketing and branding for the company, and on user experience design for our product.IDEO is an award-winning global design firm that takes a human-centered, design-based approach to helping organizations in the public and private sectors innovate and grow.

iMatchative is creating AltX, a state of the art, automated matching platform that provides hedge funds and investors with superior, more intelligent tools to use when searching for investment opportunities. My role is to translate the work of the psychology team into tools in the web-based product in order to effectively leverage the academic and research expertise within the organization.

Planet is a satellite startup that has the largest fleet of commercial satellites in space as of mid-2014. Their goal is to provide the most current images of the entire earth to their customers. I am helping the team with ground station operations -- finding and acquiring locations, assisting with the installation of antennas and dishes, and ensuring the ongoing independent operation of each satellite ground station.

Intuitive Automata created artificial intelligence conversational interfaces to help people with long-term healthcare challenges. Our platform was designed to allow our coaches to create, build up, and maintain a long-term relationship with an individual. The first product that was delivered to patients was the Autom™ diabetes management and weight loss coach.We started IA based on the work I did for my Ph.D. at the MIT Media Lab and Boston University Medical Center. Founded in 2007, the company took that academic work and turned it into a platform and product that enables long-term behavior change healthcare applications to be more effective.

AcceleratorHK is a three month startup accelerator program based in Hong Kong and focused on companies doing hybrid mobile development. I have served as one of the mentors to the companies since the program's inception.

I taught graduate-level courses on social robotics to Masters and Ph.D. students at PolyU. The interdisciplinary classes were housed within the School of Design and developed students' understanding of the intersection among computer science, engineering, psychology, and design. The courses were largely project-based, which meant that the semester concluded with students presenting novel robots that did something useful and interesting in the real world.

My Ph.D. work at the MIT Media Lab focused on long-term human-robot interaction (HRI). The coursework I assembled ranged from AI to psychology to experimental design. I also spent much of my time in real-world environments to better understand and conduct hands-on studies of how technology is used and adopted or rejected. This included a year of observing interaction with simple social robots in elderly care facilities and three years in the Nutrition and Weight Management Clinic at Boston University Medical Center.This work concluded with the successful defense of a dissertation on long-term HRI focused on healthcare applications of social robots. I conducted a randomized, controlled medical trial of a weight loss coach at Boston Medical that showed that this new interface was significantly more effective than existing programs for helping individuals adhere to a weight loss program.

During a six month period, I worked with researchers at MERL to test their work on conversational artificial intelligence through embedded conversational agents delivered with interactive robots. Using their software and hardware (MERL's Mel robot), I helped to develop a demonstration-based conversation between the robot and users and carried out extensive human-robot interaction studies to better understand the nature of this interaction.This work led to a conference paper and a journal paper in Artificial Intelligence, a top AI academic journal.

Continuing my previous work as a research assistant, I oversaw the construction, completion, and establishment of a variety of research projects in a novel, home-based research environment known as the Aware Home Research Lab. Housed within Georgia Tech's College of Computing and the Georgia Tech Broadband Institute, the Aware Home's research focus was specifically on aging in place applications of technology for seniors and included work in sensors, applications, deployment, and testing of these technologies.As a research faculty member, I taught courses on related technologies, advised undergraduate students, and oversaw numerous senior research projects that were related to our areas of focus.

Assisted with the design and development of an operator user interface for the recreation of a foreign surface-to-air missile system to be used in US war games operations. Did design, implementation, and optimization of C code to run on a Unix and VxWorks platforms for real-time user interface updates to accurately reflect the original system. Integrated with radar system input to create appropriate on-screen outputs for the operators.
