The coursework I assembled ranged from AI to psychology to experimental design. I also spent much of my time in real-world environments to better understand and conduct hands-on studies of how technology is used and adopted or rejected. This included a year of observing interaction with simple social robots in elderly care facilities and three years in the Nutrition and Weight Management Clinic at Boston University Medical Center.This work concluded with the successful defense of a dissertation on long-term HRI focused on healthcare applications of social robots. I conducted a randomized, controlled medical trial of a weight loss coach at Boston Medical that showed that this new interface was significantly more effective than existing programs for helping individuals adhere to a weight loss program. -
