Founded during the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1985, the AIDS Foundation Chicago (AFC) is a public health and housing organization that centers HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ+ health, and racial justice. The Research and Evaluation Department is responsible for evaluating projects with various partner organizations, monitoring and interpreting outcomes, collecting organizational-wide data through survey creation and distribution, and participating in academic research projects.In my first year in this role, I've worked on two main projects. The Resilience Project is an NIH-funded research project looking at how experiences of community, interpersonal, and state violence have affected the HIV care continuum of young Black men living with HIV. As the community research partner on the project, I am responsible for recruiting and screening participants, administering the Qualtrics survey, conducting hour-long interviews, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, giving out gift card incentives, and sharing our findings through writing abstracts and papers.Another main project of mine is working as an evaluator on the Road to Housing and Health (R2H) program, a SAMHSA program to connect people experiencing homelessness to permanent supportive housing and resources for mental health and substance use care. Participants who opt-in to the evaluation program are interviewed and compensated upon entering the program and every six months. We ask them about their mental and physical health, social connectedness and happiness, substance use habits, and the quality of housing and resources they've received through our program. I value the conversations I have with these participants and see my role as telling and interpreting their stories to illustrate how life-changing these housing programs are for the communities we serve.
