ChaplainWarrior Transition Unit Jul 2016 - Dec 2017Schofield Barracks, HiThis community based medical clearing house provides patients with nurse case management for ongoing medical care. The WTB's mission is to provide services for wounded warriors that are transitioning back to the active military service or into civilian life. The Chaplain helps patients find the strength to press on despite legal, economic, residential and marital problems associated with complex medical care. Chaplains assess patient espoused and lived spirituality as a source of compassion. and provide an environment where wellness can become a reality. Pastoral caregivers attempt to participate in the patient journey for a limited period of time to identify spiritual concerns and co-create meaning. The spiritual assessment measures spiritual intelligence, well-being, transcendence and organizational virtues which contribute to healing. The assessment is a diagnostic tool which is a baseline for goal setting. The patient treatment plan involves an intake phase, IDES and transition phase. IDES is a 6 phase collaboration with the VA and the medical clinic. The goals of each patient are reviewed by the interdisciplinary team after 21 days The interdisciplinary team continuously provides risk assessment and mitigation plans for a very high risk population. The Chaplain provides direct crisis intervention during all phases and provides family care workshops and counseling.

ChaplainChaplain Clinician For Surgical Suites, Wards And Clincs Jan 2015 - Jul 2016Surgical Department, Tripler AmcChaplain for the Surgical Admissions Center (SAC), “Surgical wards on 6B1 and 6 B2, the Operating Room Suites, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and OIC for the Meditation Chapel. I was the first Chaplain to arrive every morning at 5:30 AM. My daily rounds began with going to the Nursing Bed Managers office between 5:30 to 6:30 AM. Bed managers had to be at the top of their game all the time. Bed utilization was a high stress job because they had to balance beds with the cooperation of the Nursing mangers of each department. They liked it when I dropped in for short visits. They kept me informed of patient safety reports (PSRs), sentinel events, priorities for pastoral care, deaths, falls, and other significant events across the hospital. I was well informed every morning and could adjust my plan of ministry where needed and brief the other chaplains when they arrived. I visited the bed managers often during the day to cheer them up and brought pizza and other goodies from chaplain activities and they vented their frustrations. After my morning update I went to the Surgical Admissions Center (SAC) to get the daily surgery Schedule and catch up with the staff. Some of the patients would leave (same day surgery) and some would stay overnight. The staff informed me of pastoral care needs in the SAC pediatric and adult waiting rooms or if we had early critical cases. I prayed with patients and families in the PACU if I hadn’t prayed with them in the SAC. Chaplain on Institutional Review Board. Served on Ethics Committee.
