About Anthony Cox

Anthony Cox is a Computer scientist and bioinformatician with a track record of innovation in high-throughput DNA sequence analysis at Genomerics Ltd. Colleagues describe him as "Tony was the leading bioinformatician and algorithm architect at Solexa/Illumina when I joined as head of the department. I managed him at Illumina for 4,5 years. During this time Tony made significant contributions to the algorithmic design and the products comprising the data pipeline. Tony is an excellent scientist, mentor, and colleague as well as an accomplished line manager. You can find his work and thinking in the architecture of any NGS pipeline in existence today." and "I met Tony soon after joining Illumina and worked with him and his team on various projects over more than a decade there. Tony always stood out for his broad knowledge and reading of the methods literature, and his creative ability to apply new approaches to meet Illumina's constantly shifting informatics needs during this period of rapid growth. This work included one of the earliest dedicated short read mappers, an early assembly-based structural variant calling approach which heavily influenced the design of Manta/DRAGEN-SV, new BWT-based methods for the compression and indexing of short sequencing reads, and methods to efficiently and accurately genotype populations at scale, among others. In my time interacting with him, Tony has been a thoughtful, transparent and inspiring informatics leader who's been a great pleasure to work with."
