I began DT Engineering NW Ltd as a one-man start-up and the thrill of watching it grow from that tiny acorn into the oak tree it is today is one which accounts for the enthusiasm I bring into my work as the company’s Managing Director on a daily basis.I play a part in every element of the business, from liaising with clients to marketing the firm and pricing up jobs. I am a firm believer in hands-on management, which I believe is essential in establishing a rapport and respect between myself and my staff.If I was an office-based manager who didn’t know what a chain hoist was, or how to work a hoist, I wouldn’t be much use when it comes to recruiting new staff for the business. Similarly, I wouldn’t be able to sell our company to potential new clients if I couldn’t talk with authority about crane maintenance or crane manufacturing.Although I am a Managing Director, I am first and foremost an engineer, and when you are dealing with DT Engineering you can be sure that each and every member of staff here will have similar expertise. Back in the 20th century before I even dreamed of becoming Managing Director of a company like DT Engineering NW Ltd, I took my first steps into working in the crane maintenance and crane manufacturing industry with a five year apprenticeship at Foxall Palmer.As a school leaver, working for a business which tested and examined lifting equipment could not have been a better introduction into the world of lifting engineering, and after my apprenticeship was over I was hired as a service engineer. Technology has moved on since I worked for Foxall Palmer. When we supply an electric chain hoist for a client or repair an electric chain block the finished product is far and away superior to the products we supplied back in the 1970s, but what I learned at Foxall Palmer has served me well since leaving the company in the 1980s.The importance of properly testing lifting equipment could not have been drilled into me more clearly than it was at Foxall, and making sure all our work is completed to the very highest of standards is something that has turned DT Engineering NW Ltd into the company it is today.As its Managing Director, I consider it my main duty to ensure that all our engineers know that whether we’re working for a big client such as Jaguar Land Rover or a small start-up, our work needs to be beyond reproach.When it comes to crane manufacturing and crane maintenance, the finished product is either perfect or useless – there is no middle ground and any of our clients will tell you that they come back to us for a good reason.Whatever we’re making or repairing for you – be it an electric chain hoist, a jib crane or electric overhead traveling crane – we guarantee that you will be pleased with the end result.
