  • Sleep Number Labs
    Director, Technical Product Strategy
Sleep Number Labs Aug 2021 - Mar 2024
    San Jose, California, Us
I led the strategy on the science and technology of connected sleep health, overseeing a portfolio of strategic research projects.I was involved in merger and acquisition (M&A) activities and external partnerships. Among the external partnerships was work with the Digital Medicine Society (DiME) to develop a core set of digital measures of sleep. Other partnerships included collaborations with external research groups.
  • Bigfoot Biomedical
    Director, Systems Thinking
    Bigfoot Biomedical Oct 2016 - Jul 2018
    Milpitas, California, Us
I built a team to create a core competency to leverage Model-Based Development/Design in the research and development of medical devices to improve the lives of people with diabetes through the application of smart technology. The focus was from a systems-engineering perspective, down through the design and implementation of specific algorithms. At the system-level we focused on understanding the choices and tradeoffs of proposed designs, understanding emergent properties and ensuring a high degree of certainty on the performance and quality of the systems through modeling and simulation. At the detail level the algorithms developed were integrated into our devices through automatic code generation from the corresponding models.I also supported overall systems-level activities, including high-level system design, design risk analysis activities, as well as leading technical design reviews.
  • Medtronic Diabetes
    Senior Principal Scientist
    Medtronic Diabetes Jun 2014 - Oct 2016
I was involved in research and development of the MiniMed 670G product to automate insulin delivery based on glucose sensor data. More broadly my focus was on front-end development aimed at improving product features, ensuring safety, mathematical modeling, and algorithm development. In my role I was a spokesman for Medtronic Diabetes. I regularly presented on topics related to our technologies, in particular the development of an artificial pancreas system. I did this for physician visits at the Diabetes HQ, as well as for other geographies, including Spain, Germany and Latin America. I presented at external medical conferences within the United States, Brazil, Mexico and Spain.During my time with the systems engineering group I mentored and supervised a masters level student doing independent research (Anne Maas), whose work was related to physiology modeling related to meal dynamics and behavior. I also supervised and led various technical teams, and mentored younger engineers within the organization.I also maintained ongoing connections with people in the academic community who are engaged in work relevant to our own. Some of these have resulted in my participation as an external examiner for students completing the masters and doctorate degrees.
  • Medtronic Diabetes
    Principal Scientist
    Medtronic Diabetes Aug 2007 - Jun 2014
    Minneapolis, Mn, Us
I played a key role in the development of the Predictive Low Glucose Management (PGLM) algorithm, which is the main feature in the 640G pump. I set up the physiology modeling framework used in this project, which helped the team drive the design process using principles of set-based engineering. This framework also enabled us to test for multiple edge conditions, some of which emerged from the simulations and had not been anticipated by the team. This work resulted in several patent applications, some related to the algorithms, and others to metrics developed in the context of the design process to assess system performance. As a part of the closed loop development group my research focused on the development of closed-loop algorithms for insulin delivery to regulate blood glucose, both for patients with type 1 diabetes (ambulatory use), as well as those patients in critical care that require insulin (in hospital use). Work performed during this time was eventually incorporated into the MiniMed 670G product.I also mentored and supervised graduate student interns.
  • University Of California Santa Barbara
    Postdoctoral Research Fellow
University Of California Santa Barbara Oct 2004 - Aug 2007
    Santa Barbara, Ca, Us
Department of Chemical Engineering and the Biomolecular Science and Engineering Program at UCSB, mentored by Prof. Francis J. Doyle III.Research was a collaborative effort with the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute. Research focused on modeling and algorithm development to regulate blood glucose using continuous glucose sensors and a subcutaneous insulin infusion pump, using a model predictive control strategy. In prior research, I developed strategies that use run-to-run control to adjust basal insulin infusion and prandial insulin bolus dosing for individuals with type 1 diabetes on continuous insulin infusion pumps. Modeling work using clinical data includes the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp experimental protocol, as well as the incorporation of the circadian changes in insulin sensitivity.– Mentored a postdoctoral fellow.– Mentored students at the Ph.D. (three) and M.S. (one) levels.– Mentored and supervised three undergraduate students doing independent research.
  • Sansum Diabetes Research Institute
    Guest Investigator
Sansum Diabetes Research Institute Oct 2004 - Aug 2007
    Santa Barbara, Ca, Us
Mentored by Lois Jovanovič, M.D.My work at SDRI involved the human subject clinical trial component of the research done in collaboration with UCSB.
  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
    Postdoctoral Fellow
    Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 2003 - 2004
    Troy, Ny, Us
The Isermann Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, worked with Prof. B. Wayne Bequette.Developed, and characterized in silico, a method for real-time estimation of blood glucose and its application to the prediction and detection of hypoglycemia.– Mentored a student at the Ph.D. level.
