The department produces and maintains business software across the professional services, finance, education and manufacturing sectors. Much of the department work is mission-critical to clients and includes resold products (e.g. web portals) but is moving more towards bespoke work. Our largest project - a bespoke API for card payments - requires team adherence to strict Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards (DSS) in order to maintain the client’s ongoing compliance status.As this department has not historically been profitable, I have worked on drawing up turnaround plans and convinced the board to let me take on the department management. Early signs have been good, with improved procedures and processes, better tracking of opportunities, better quoting and better internal engagement. The work pipeline includes fresh work developed from new conversations, and multi-year relationships with clients coming back for ongoing work.Main responsibilities: department strategy (commercial, products and operations), internal liaison with all parties, maintaining and reporting department KPI data, project management (typically 3-6 projects active), pre-sales and quote generation (typically 10-15 concurrent leads and opportunities), ongoing client relationship management, general staff management, and implementation of change.
