When evaluating a nurse’s bedside clinical experience, what can you infer from the bed itself? Even in the Army Nurse Corps, all nurses start with the garden-variety Strykers and Hill-Roms. However, my functional understanding of a “bed” evolved dramatically, even for the standards set forth by the ANC. A “bed” became anything that was flat, and next to something that was safe. Pickup truck beds, helicopter cabins, a piece of plywood. Even the bare ground did just fine, so long as there was a wall or a rock to hide behind.I have had the privilege of both performing and educating others in trauma care, in multiple multinational efforts. I have developed individuals into professionals, built those professionals into teams, and orchestrated those teams into regional strategies. Fast forward a few years from the pinnacle of my military career, and I am excited, humbled, and grateful for the opportunity to dedicate my skills and experiences to the healthcare and emergency infrastructure of the City of El Paso and the great State of Texas.
