" and "In the late 1980s, Ricoh Corporation started an Advanced Technology Division (ATD) in Silicon Valley to cusomize products for the U.S. market. We started as strictly an R&D group but quickly outgrew that function. Catherine joined to provide a very needed interface between engineers focused on a isolated projects, a procurement department unfamiliar with purchasing small volumes, and a management focused on Ricoh's facsimile and copier business. It was a difficult position which she handled extremely well. After a few months, she was promoted to Market Planner in the New Business group where she worked for the next 18 months. She drafted business plans for new products, researched competitive products and sales strategies, investigated possible sales channels, and forcasted volumes and pricing structures. As a side activity, she coordinated trade show activities for ATD. This was a time before the internet, and it became clear this Japanese subsidiary was in serious need of some form of a library. Catherine proposed a new project, successfully pitched it to a predominantly Japanese management, hired the librarian, and oversaw the project until it could function on its own. Simply put, she impressed everyone involved. Catherine is an understatement. She makes the difficult look simple, focuses on results instead of credit. It is people like her who make a company work, who easily handle problems that could blow up and consume resources if mismanaged.
