Below ground constraints have generated a unique external structure that produces 3.5m high column-free space throughout, while the shade from the structure allows large windows that give panoramic views from each floor. The industrial material palette celebrates stripped back, authentic materials including fair-faced concrete, saw-milled timber and salvaged light fittings. The structure rises above roof level to create glazed, wind sheltered gardens at the 14th and 16th floor levels. The building will exceed statutory environmental standards. The reception spaces and restaurants open onto the new south-facing public tow path with giant motorized doors.We are working closely with several artists who have been commissioned by Derwent London to make site specific work, including steel constructions by James Capper that will be displayed in the large atrium.

The form of the building is shaped by its townscape setting and works by Wren of exceptional significance: St Pauls Cathedral, St Mary-le-Bow to the north and St Mary Aldermary across the street.The design draws upon the character of the surrounding area, creating polygon shapes to reflect the geometry formed by the diagonal intervention of Queen Victoria and Cannon Street, fused with the historic grid of the conservation area to the north. The views of St Paul’s and the other churches are improved while a series of roof terraces and glass pavilions offer panoramic views of the surrounding skyline. The dense street pattern of lanes, alleys and courts of the Bow Lane conservation area are recreated with the formation of Salters Court which provides permeability, resolves the complicated levels and engages the surrounding dominantly pedestrian friendly public realm. Expanding the retail frontage on Bow Lane supports its special character with new high quality shop fronts facing the church yard of St Mary Aldermary.Internally the large floor plates are wrapped around a central core providing uninterrupted office space drenched with day light, including the toilets overlooking Salters Court, and unparalleled views of the city.
