𝗠𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝘆I wanted to apply the skills I developed as a freelancer to a mission-driven organization. At The Soho Center, a large mental health clinic, I leverage these skills and draw from my graduate studies in the sociology of mental health. 𝗠𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝘆I jumped at the opportunity to work with a former colleague at CitySquash, a nonprofit that provides after-school programming. Fresh off my graduate studies, I was especially interested in how the after-school space could be a vehicle for addressing inequities by meeting structural and holistic needs.𝗠𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲I ran an after-school academics program for middle school and high school youth, including delivering a personally-designed curriculum, tutoring, and providing mindfulness training/activities.During the pandemic, I helped organize and train a large contingent of volunteer tutors to help students make measurable improvements in grades. I was especially energized while designing and implementing summer book clubs, including training and mentoring colleagues and volunteers to be club leaders.

𝗠𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝘆After my experience in Teach For America, I was even more motivated to understand mechanisms of inequality. Paired with my growing interest in mental health, this led me to Emory's sociology program where many faculty members focus on health and mental well-being.𝗠𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬I focused my content courses on health and social psychology, and methodologically studied quantitative research methods, including large language modeling.𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩I explored data sets related to mental health and religion, both quantitative and qualitative. 𝗠𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝘆As an early professional, I had developed a love for yoga to help maintain mental and physical well-being. I chose to enter a teacher-training program to deepen my practice and offer support to others, which turned into full-time work while also allowing me to consider next career steps.𝗠𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲I prepared sequences for weekly schedules of about 10 vinyasa classes including gentle, beginner, intermediate, and restorative. I also held a number of studio-assigned contracts, including at an elementary/middle school.

𝗠𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝘆As a yoga instructor, I was finding greatest satisfaction working with young people that needed extra help managing emotions. This community-based nonprofit placed me in after-school programs at low-income schools and provided the resources to lead classes for all ages.𝗠𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲I created fun, dynamic sequences to meet children where they were and teach them stress management skills.

𝗠𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝘆Experiences volunteering, a natural desire to help others, and successful experiences working with children led me into teaching. My studies in sociology had me especially interested in helping address inequality and learning gaps, leading me to Teach For America with its explicit mission for closing achievement gaps.𝗠𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲I taught high school English and sociology, implementing data-based instruction, differentiated learning, Socratic seminars, community book clubs, and student symposiums. I cultivated brain-based learning environments and taught character and growth-mindset practices.I also pioneered and trained other teachers in creating paperless classrooms with the goal of increasing technology literacy. In a pre-pandemic world, many of my students had limited access to technology and online learning platforms. My goal was to prepare them for workplaces that would require these skills.
