Having been born and raised in the midlands of the UK, I ventured north to the historic and picturesque city of Lancaster; the gateway to the Lake District, to study my undergraduate degree. My passion for the hard sciences lead me to study both physics and chemistry at Lancaster University through their Natural Sciences degree. The experience grew me as a person and I forged many new friendships and developed my passion for the outdoors and rock climbing in the iconic national parks of the UK.Having completed my masters of science at Lancaster University and achieving a first class honors, I decided to continue my studies in Lancaster and apply my multidisciplinary knowledge and experiences to researching the physical sciences. I then completed a PhD in the newly formed Department of Chemistry at Lancaster University, which is rated as a top ten university in the UK and 10th for research quality (Research Exercise Framework 2014), working in the Toghill group. My research interests centred on the field of physical electrochemistry and the development of energy storage devices for grid-scale power management of renewable energy resources. Specifically, my research aimed to develop new chemistries for non-aqueous redox-flow batteries with the goal of producing new prototype systems which can out perform the current commercial aqueous systems. Following this I worked as a postdoctoral research associate investigating novel approaches for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction. My main objective was the coupling of the redox flow battery technology with carbon dioxide utilisation to combat carbon dioxide emissions and provide enhanced grid stability.After a ten-year run at Lancaster University, it was time for a fresh start so I relocated to Swansea University in December 2021. Since then I am now based in the Energy Safety Research Institute (ESRI) and affiliated with SUSTAIN; a multidiscipline research entity tackling the modern day challenges underpinning steel production. Working on Task 1 - carbon neutral steel making, my research pursues economically viable and industrially practical carbon dioxide reduction technology via electrochemical reactors.
