Since 1999, I have been with the Tribal Government of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, a federally recognized tribe and Indian reservation in Maricopa County, AZ northeast of Phoenix. In my present position, I direct all human resource activities related to the employees of the tribal government of Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, including civic administration, public safety, and medical services. I administer tribal government’s employee benefit plan, workers’ compensation, diversity and equal opportunity efforts, and compliance with HR regulations and laws that affect the reservation. Hire and manage a team of ## of HR professionals in support.From 2012 – 2014, I simultaneously served on a temporary basis as Acting Human Resources Director for Fort McDowell Enterprises, including the Fort McDowell Casino and WeKoPa Golf Course

In this role as a HR generalist, I had several duties, including safety and risk management, training and development, and workers’ compensation insurance. I recruited, screened, and interviewed candidates for tribal employment, and conducted background and reference checks, and education verification. I was able to reduce by 50% workers’ compensation claim cost in first two years in the role and have maintained that reduced level up to the present.During this time, I also managed our employee population’s transition from a five-day to a four-day work week, and to a paid time off (PTO) program to replace a traditional vacation/sick days plan.
