Responsible for project managing the successful implementation of an Access Control System at the Port Waratah Coal Services Carrington and Kooragang Terminals comprising of security gatehouses, boom gates, unmanned vehicle gates, access controlled buildings, CCTV and the development of new security procedures and training programs. Project implemented to client’s specification, budget and delivery time-frame with no injuries.

Responsible for the provision of a core Engineering Services function to support Research operations involving the prototyping and development of experimental equipment. This involved managing the operations of an Engineering Services Group comprising of Electronics / Instrumentation, Mechanical and Electrical engineering professional, technical and trades personnel. Also responsible for the site Facilities Maintenance function involving the development and implementation of Facilities Maintenance plans for the delivery of required services to the Research facility. Management representative on the site OH&S Committee and active in developing new safety management systems and improvement activities. Chief Fire Warden Role. Number of persons supervised: 16 - 25 staff (5-8 engineering professionals, 3-6 technical, 8-11 trades) and 5 - 10 contractors. Responsible for Facilities Maintenance and Research project budgets.

Responsible for the development of leading edge Electronic Instrumentation for the key BHP Business Groups (Steelmaking, Minerals and Petroleum) involving the preparation of project specifications and cost quotations / budgets, project planning / scheduling and control, engineering design, implementation, commissioning, documentation, training, supervision of multi-disciplinary technical staff, customer liaison, formulation and management of external contracts, interaction with external organisations on collaborative Research Projects, writing Company reports / external papers and seminar presentations. Project budgets of $500K’s.Major project achievements included: Bloom Mill End-Crop & Width Imaging system with laser height measurement (resulted in $500K p.a. improved productivity), Production based Surface Seismic Recording System (200 channels, 24-bit resolution, high speed telemetry, Winner of Australian Design Mark (Standards Australia) - 1995), Clampable Borehole Digitiser, Ship Hull Stress Monitoring System for bulk carriers (BHP Transport Asset Life Extension Project with collaborative Research partners IHI, LRS, AMECRC), SQUID based magnetometer for airborne exploration (collaborative Research project with BHP Minerals, CSIRO and Geoterrex), Intrinsically Safe (I.S.) Responsible for project budgets of $100K’s and supervision of technical and trades personnel.Major project achievements included: Hydrophone Seismic Digitiser for cross-hole seismic exploration (including custom ASIC design), I.S. Synchronised Shot Exploder (ex ia, Zone 0), Surface Seismic Portable Transient Recorder System, Electro-Magnetic Repetitive Seismic Source for deep bore-hole applications, In-Plant Coal Washery Performance Analyser, Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) Sonde digitiser & compass for borehole applications.

Worked with a team of 4 electronic engineers and 3 electronic technicians in developing specialised Instrumentation for BHP Research projects supporting the key BHP Business Groups (Steelmaking, Minerals and Petroleum). Responsible for project budgets of $100K’s and supervision of technical and trades personnel.Major project achievements included: Blast Furnace Laser profiler, Fibre Optic Rapid Gas Analysis System, Work Function Analyser, Blast Furnace Trajectory Probe, I.S. Remote Seismic Digitiser (ex ia, Zone 0) and numerous smaller projects involving signal conditioning and high resolution (24 bit) data acquisition in hostile environments.

Worked in a team comprising of 1 electronic engineer, 2 geophysicists, 1 mechanical and 1 mining engineer in developing custom electronic hardware and software for specialised mine instrumentation for BHP Minerals operations.Major project achievement was the development of an underground Intrinsically Safe (I.S.) in-seam seismic recording system (ex ia, Zone 0) winning an Australian Design and Engineering Excellence awards.
