Having completed the National Grid Graduate Development Programme, I have taken up my first post within the Global Procurement - European Business Development team.Having supported the delivery of both the Nemo Link and NSN interconnector procurement events, I have now taken a leading role in the delivery of National Grid's interconnector project, IFA2, alongside our Joint Venture partner RTE.I have been responsible for ensuring the procurement exercise progresses in line with business requirements in order to meet Ofgem requirements. To date this has included driving the PQQ process and evaluations, ITT development, hosting of supplier workshops and the preparation of negotiation strategies.

During this placement, my final placement of the National Grid Graduate Development Programme, I worked as a Commercial Operations Analyst within the Interconnector Operations Team. During this 6 month placement I looked at a number of areas that impact on the day to day running of National Grid's two existing interconnectors, IFA and BritNed.My responsibilities included analysing the level of change and impact that new European Network Codes would have on operations, developing a commercially driven training package for BritNed's Control Room Operators, introducing a Project Governance system and looking at wider market information and how this could be used to improve revenue and profits.

In this 6 month placement I worked in the Major Projects team in Global Procurement, over the course of this post I was exposed to a number of large tender projects incorporating significant amounts of strategy in to the procurement process as well as a much larger focus on understanding any regulatory implications that may come from decisions made at any stage of the project.I had particular focus on the strategic work that goes in to the procurement process for HVDC interconnector projects, this gave me the opportunity to be involved in the up front development of a project and procurement plan for one of National Grid's projects as well as developing a supplier development programme for Global Procurement to adopt when engaging HVDC suppiers. This has given me the opportunity to build a strong category knowledge of HVDC technology and solid understanding of how the market operates.I was also given the opportunity to be heavily involved in part of a wider cross-functional team, tasked with delivering information to Ofgem relating to National Grid's Near Term Interconnector Projects (NTIP) which will ultimately lead to decisions being made on what projects will be granted a regulatory cap and floor regime, this has given me a much better understanding of the challenges facing both National Grid and the Regulator when evaluating these projects.I have also continued to focus on my own personal development, as I have looked to gain greater levels of understanding in new areas of the business, looking at areas that fall outside of National Grid's traditional core businesses.

In this 6 month placement within the Facilities Management & Energy team of National Grid Global Procurement I was given a number of projects to run and manage independently.I supported tender events and ran my own mini tender and selection processes for both regulated and unregulated areas of the business. I was also given the opportunity to work on contract extensions and category strategy reviews, this allowed me to gain a better understanding of the variety of services required to successfully run and maintain the background services for a large corporate organisation.During this placement there was also a strong focus on my own personal development and broadening my wider knowledge of National Grid in order to gain a greater appreciation of the core business. By visiting a variety of different National Grid's operational sites, I built an appreciation for the variety of tasks and processes that are integral to ensuring that National Grid deliver on key RIIO outputs whilst delivering good returns for shareholders

Whilst at HMRC I worked in a number of teams across a number of different areas of the Personal Tax Operations, this enabled me to build a strong knowledge of PAYE and Self Assessment tax systems. Throughout this time with HMRC I had to take in to consideration a number of aspects such as; policy, business objectives and efficiency targets as part of my day to day responsibilities.During my final two years at HMRC I worked as part of the Underpayment Support Team (UST). UST was a new work stream that had been created so that the department could offer vulnerable customers better options when having to repay any underpaid taxes.Having highlighted a number of issues with the monitoring system that was in operation following the creation of payment plans, I joined a project team with the objective of changing this process in order to create a best in class process. As part of this team we introduced over 30 changes to the end to end process, from underpaid taxpayers entering the system to the point that their payment plan finished, these improvements are estimated to have saved over £600 million in lost revenue.
