As the business grew into it's niche, I too grew into a role that allowed me to support our customers, linking their problems with our solutions earlier. There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing a client face light up when they realized we are here to help them. Job satisfaction.The other part of my role is trying to figure out what are the problems in the market that we could be solving. So come on then, questions on a postcard?

Once I realized I was in tune with the business, and couldn't get out, I immersed myself managing a team of Project Engineers delivering many different and varied projects to internal and external clients, from winches to Reel drive systems, to complex lifting solution. Through this period the company continued to invest in Linear Winches and I grew with that, supporting the business in understanding their design, refining them, and helping offer our customers cost effective solutions for their lifting projects around the world.

I joined ACE for what was supposed to a couple of months working with the Engineering team to deliver the most powerful winch in the world. Long story back I haven't looked back, simply immersing myself in the place and the people.This was my introduction to Linear Winches from a design and build prospective, and a massive eye opener into how a multi-disciplined engineering team can pull together and delivery a world leading product in a short timescale.Did we have challenges, yes. Did we overcome them, of course!

Why do one job when you can do two right?With my history of lifting operations, and willingness to not keep my experiences secret I was more than happy to support the business overseeing lifting operations. This saw me not only helping deliver safe lifting operations but also in ensuring others learned about lifting to spread the good word.

Like Technip, but with more party.Bibby was a great place to work. We worked hard and might have partied in our spare time. The projects came thick and fast, and with a buoyant market they didn't stop. I have never felt more at home than when I was running a shift on the Bibby Polaris, simple. You hear folks say that its the people that make a business, and never a truer embodiment of that phrase could have been imagined than Bibby, from the top all the way to the bottom. I learned so much in this role, mostly about problem solving, and delivering some pretty complex workscopes in record pace.Thankfully Bibby was the only office I have ever worked in with a Costa Coffee. My bank balance couldn't have coped much longer.

Westhill - Subsea Capital Of The World

I'm not joking by the way, there is actually an official sign post with just those words when you come into Westhill, which to visitors is a little town just outside Aberdeen.This was my first job in 'Subsea' and boy was I surprised! I recall at the interview telling the Engineering Manager that I expected to be promoted to Project Manager within 6 months. At 6 month I realized there was so so so much for me to learn that I was in no rush at all. In 3 years I managed to cover a good bit of what Technip was and still is good at, mainly EPIC projects, or building oil fields in short, and ran all sorts of tasks from Riser installation to Pipelay to Structure installation. At the time Technip was still full of some of the great and grey experienced of the patch and it was an unforgettable experience working with them, and for that I am forever grateful.

Having done an OK job as a Project Engineer I was promoted to the role of Contract Support Engineer. I was responsible for the the management of cranes, crane maintenance and lifting operations on a number of operated managed assets within the North Sea, for various major operators. In other words, I was the first person on the phone when everything didn't go to plan.This was my first 'client facing role' and I loved it. I distinctly remember my first client meeting going so badly I felt like hiding under the desk, but it went up from there!I quickly realized that keeping clients and my own team happy at all times was the name of the game, something that I have been working on ever since! As they say every day is a school day!

Ah, my introduction to the world of Projects, the hallowed land awaits! As Project Engineer for various crane maintenance and upgrade workscope in the North Sea, and in addition a selection of topside upgrade projects, valve and turbine changeouts I learned massively about the Lifting industry. This was the beginning of a theme that has run through the remainder of my career to date.I met so many characters in this role, moving around the North Sea, some of the great pioneers all with stories to tell. I also remember my boss explaining that as a Project Engineer I was allowed to work flexy time, in his words "you can come in as early as you want and leave as late as you like!"

Working under the supervision of an experienced engineer, undertaking varying structural design tasks on lifting, topside and subsea equipment. My last job as a 'real' engineering before entering the colourful world of Projects. Hamish, my boss in this role, was a great mentor, and kept me focused on the job in hand, and the quality of the design output.Working between our small office in Dyce, clients offices and the companies head office in Grantown on Spey, it proved to be a life of variety. I do miss Granny Mackellar coming round with the 'piece' order from the baker every morning!

Working full time over the summer and on a part time basis during term time, I worked as part of the technical team, providing support for the service and maintenance tasks on work over control systems. This was my first job in the 'real world' and as such was such a great learning experience. I think this inspired me to finish Uni to be honest, and get out into the real world.Prior to being sold to Proserv, the business was owned by a group of real gritty entrepreneurs which was an education in itself, and something that I have not forgotten.

In this role I embraced my love of cycling, and the need for staff discount by working as a mechanic and salesman at ‘Cycling World’, which eventually became Edinburgh Bicycles. A great up bringing in bicycle mechanics that I still practice to this day.Some would say I'm just to tight to pay to have my bike fixed, but I'd argue otherwise!

During my time studying (drinking) at University I worked with an unbelievable teams of grafters at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, keeping the place clean and tidy. When I say unbelievable grafters, I really mean it, as without the efforts they put in, the care givers, doctors and nurses couldn’t do their valuable role. In all my time there I never saw a glimmer of arrogance or distain for the ‘lesser’ cleaners, in fact anything from it, as the ‘system’ couldn’t work without them. This taught me a lot about humility, and the importance of team work, from every corner of a business or service. Big up the cleaners!Big up the key workers!!!!
