My IT career started in 1984 at the age of 17 working for a company called Sumlock Bondain based in City Road, Islington. Sumlock Bondain supplied business computers to companies in the City of London and my first role was to build and prepare IBM PC's. Part of the preparation involved the installation of 72 memory chips to increase the RAM from 256 KB to 640 KB. How times have changed…In 1986 I joined Computacenter, one of the largest computer service providers of the time. I started in their Strand office as a field service engineer and spent the next 11 years with them, gaining invaluable experience and eventually achieving promotion to consultant.The latter half of the 1980’s was an exciting time to work in IT as the business computing market exploded, with corporate customers placing a PC on every desk. At Computacenter, I was involved in the deployment of the first PC-based servers running the Novell NetWare operating system.PC-based servers were revolutionary as they made network computing affordable for many businesses. The Compaq SystemPro was one of the first PC’s specifically designed as a network server.After leaving Computacenter, I became a self-employed contractor for several years, working mainly for Asprey & Garrard in their Regent Street office, and Fidelity Investments at their Tonbridge, Reigate, and London offices.At Fidelity Investments I met a fellow IT contractor, Neil Schwemm. Neil had founded CHS as an IT support company and he proposed that we give up contracting to grow CHS into a successful business. I agreed and became a full-time employee and shareholder of CHS in 2002.
