Craig M. Wellman retired from DuPont in 2003. He then worked part time for ten years as an independent consultant to support his volunteer work on electrical safety. He was active in IEEE standards development. Mr. Wellman served DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware for thirty years as an electrical project engineer responsible for designing facilities and as an electrical consultant serving plant support, design, and marketing functions. He is a Life Fellow in IEEE and he received the IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award in 2018. He served as Chair of the IEEE Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations Working Group P1584 from it's founding in 2000 until 2016. He was an active member of the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee (PCIC) Standards Sub-committee for 25 years. He presented many PCIC papers and presented some six tutorials at PCIC conferences and the IAS Electrical Safety Workshop. He is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a BSEE degree and was a registered PE in Delaware.As Chair of the P1584 Working Group on Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations, he led the group in developing a new standard in only two years. This effort involved fundraising, testing in high power laboratories, developing a new model of the arc-flash hazard, writing the text, and balloting the standard. The Working Group then developed an amendment and a related standard and was working on a revision to the original standard when he stepped down. The models in IEEE 1584-2002 are available in at least five commercial electrical power system analysis programs and are included in NFPA 70E, “Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace”. Hundreds of engineers have been performing arc-flash hazard calculations in industrial, public utility, institutional and governmental facilities using this model. It has enabled an understanding of where in a power system design revisions or personal protective equipment are needed.
