When I was in Grade 10, I made the decision to go to University after I finished Grade 12. I applied to the Faculty of Commerce because I wanted to be a Businessman. Whatever that meant.After graduating I took a year off and worked in Cardiff. In October 1982, I landed in Cardiff with no job, no visible means of support, and nowhere to live. Within a few weeks I found a job. One that would lay the foundation for my career, and one that taught me things about myself that I was completely unaware of. I was initially turned down for the job because they said my International Driver's License would not permit me to drive a 3 ton truck required for the job. I disagreed and got a ruling from the local Police Station which said I could drive it legally. I got the job. That job brought me out of my shell. I was a top producer and was promoted to Supervisor in a few months. It was during those first few months that I was accused by some of my customers of having the gift of the gab. The nerve! That was a seminal moment.I have had a very rewarding career so far. In the last 2 years I have realized that I am looking for something more from my next chapter. Passion and job satisfaction come to mind. If those are there, performance and earnings are a by product.If the last 6 months is a preview of retirement, I'm not ready yet. Over the next 10 to 15 years, I would like to perform in a role that I will be passionate about, and that will fulfill me. I believe that my abilities and competencies have never been keener.I am a very different person today than that 21 year old selling soft drinks in Cardiff. My career has taught me how to listen, how to make people feel at ease, how to communicate, how to empathize, how to self motivate, how to be disciplined, and how to be persistent. It has given me the confidence and the faith that I will be able to accomplish whatever I set my mind to. I'm not sure that makes me a Businessman. Maybe it does.
