About Craig Barron
Craig Barron is an Academy- and Emmy-award-winning VFX artist and film historian who is the Creative Director at Magnopus, a Los Angeles-based media company that produces visual development and virtual production services for motion pictures and television. With a career producing visual effects for film and television that spans the age of traditional matte painting and miniatures to the latest in digital technology, Barron brings experienced-based innovation to creative collaborations and partnerships.Barron is an adjunct associate professor of visual effects at USC School of Cinematic Arts and is a lecturer on the history and techniques of classic film effects for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. He produces documentaries and presentations on VFX history for Turner Classic Movies and Criterion. He served on the planning committee and works as a consultant for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and produces videos on studio-era VFX pioneers for the Museum. He is a member of the Academy Board of Governors, visual effects branch, and has served as co-chair of the AMPAS Science & Technology Council. Barron and co-author Mark Cotta Vaz wrote the first comprehensive book on the history of matte painting and its transition into the digital age, The Invisible Art: The Legends of Movie Matte Painting (Chronicle Books).Barron began his career at Industrial Light & Magic, and went on to produce seamless visual effects for feature films, commercials, television, computer games and IMAX at his own studio Matte World Digital. He contributed to the visual effects on more than 100 films beginning with The Empire Strikes Back to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, winning an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2009 for that film. He served the artistic visions of directors Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Alfsono Cuaron, and Tim Burton, among others. He has been Creative Director at Magnopus since 2014.
